Don't know if anyone heard about Raymond Davis (CIA Officer imprisoned in Pakistan for shooting two youths in Lahore) back in January when it happened, but here is a detailed article about what went down. There are a lot of lessons to be learned from this article.

Read the whole thing for more back story.

It really highlights the importance of training. In stressful situations, we don't have enough time to think; our hours of training will do the "thinking" for us. Not just for accuracy, but for threat acquisition and elimination.

Would you guys have done anything different?

What can be applied from the self defense shooting by a CIA subcontract operative in a foreign country?

Nothing after the shooting seems applicable except to stay quiet until authorities on your side can engage to help win your freedom. The farther from home you are the more difficult this is.

Nothing before the shooting seems applicable since his job was to avoid this risk, but required him to go where the risk was greatest. Most of us can avoid exposing ourselves to high risk areas, while some of us are professionally required to go into high crime areas exposing ourselves to the risk of violent attack. In the later case we can control some of the factors of professionally going into high risk environments, like when and with who.

We all know that training and practice for realistic defensive shooting situations is critical to our survival, but hardly anyone puts the time or money into this important part of our personal defense. We can see that it paid off for Mr. Davis.

We also know that having the will to survive and to act violently is critical to our survival, but as civilians we don't know how we'll react because we've never been trained or earned the experience to deal with violent encounters.

Incidents concerning CIA Operatives are beyond the scope of the ST&T forum.
