is a mag/barrel clamp necessary when adding a mag extension to a tactical shotgun? I have a Benelli M2 and ordered a DMW extension to sit flush with the barrel. Nordic makes a clamp for their extensions but DMW doesn't.

"Tactical" to me, means a battle weapon, which means you might have to use your gun to smash someone over the head.

Be a real shame to bend the mag tube extension so the gun didn't work anymore!

If it was mine, and I had an extension hanging out there in the breeze waiting to get whacked, I for sure would want a barrel clamp supporting the end of it.

Use the clamp with an extension or you will probably be sorry if you don't. I have only seen a couple of buggered up magazine tubes and both could have been prevented with use of a clamp.

If I needed a clamp I'd go for the Nordic with the picatinny rail.....might as well have somewear to mount a flashlight if you feel like it.

You don't have to have a mag tube clamp.

If I were using my shotgun in a true combat type situation I would probably use a clamp. I don't plan to be using my shotguns as a battering ram though. There are tools made for that. A clamp only adds a little more support. You can still cause damage to a shotgun mag tube even though it has a clamp. One of the problems with all mag tube clamps is they tend to walk on you with recoil.

The only really strong mag tube setup is the one Mossberg uses on the 590 shotguns.

does the nordic clamp fit any mag extension? Only info I could find was on cactustactical.com which says the nordic clamp is made to be used with the nordic mag extension....I have the DMW extension.

Edit: I just looked on shootersconnection.com and they have the DMW clamp however they give this explaination about how orders under $25.00 incur a $5.00 handling fee plus whatever shipping is (which you don't know before checkout, you have to tell them what method of shipping you want). They don't ship out by USPS everyday and I need this by Friday the latest. I think this is wierd but I guess I have to put up with this odd way.

I'm giving the Nordic a spin for my 870/Wilson combat extension. Hope it fits. Brownells has them.

got my nordic clamp today.....how "tight" do you tighten this thing? I don't want to damage the barrel and extension by over tightening it.

Looks like it could use a bit of work on the barrel fit...wrap some masking tape around your barrel and then put a piece of 100 grit emery cloth on there.... you should be able to quickly re-shape the clamp for a better fit.

There's no such thing as a tactical anything. The term is a marketing term only. It has nothing to do with 'battle' or anything else. It's about separating you from your money. Period. The marketing term used to be 'Police'.
That being said, I've had a mag extension on my 870 without any clamps for eons. Works just fine.

If you're walking around without a clap and a rope or table edge or whatever gets in between, I can imagine bad things happening. I use a clamp. On my 870, the mag extension is held there only by the threading, which is not a strong point of connection like, say, the butt stock to the receiver.

my clamp is like greyeyezz's......it also came loose when I was firing my gun and it rubbed some of the matte finish from the barrel. I was told to use Locktight on the screws and tighten that thing snugly and it will never move.

is the clamp suppose to wrap around the entire cylinder of the barrel and clamp? Mine doesn't.

Not sure what you mean.....does your's fit like the one in Grey's picture?
Does the clamp radius match the barrel and mag tube's radius?
You could try gluing on some rubber(bike tube) to the clamp or maybe some of that rubber paint that people use to coat tool handles with....not sure what that stuff is called?

yes it's like Grey's. Both clamp pieces do not touch each other when it is installed. There is a gap between the top and bottom portions.

I'm thinking to lose the clamp altogether. If it moves, what's the point of having it on? I shoot it out in a field, no moving around in the house and bumping into things.

The gap between the clamps is not really an issue and it allows you to fine tune the fit a bit if the dimensions are off.

Looking at the pictures posted above, it appears that the clamp does not make full and even contact with the barrel and the mag tube.

Is yours like this?

yes mine is like that.....am about to lose the clamp altogether. Is my gun really going to be all fugged up if I didn't use it? It's messing up the finish on my barrel. And no matter how much I tighten the thing, it still moves.

I'm back.

I found a craftsman 1/4" extension fits perfectly, plus a slice, between barrel and extension and i'll use it as a gauge. I'll crank down the Nordic and monitor the gap. If it closes somthing's bending which is not good.

I'll test fire this weekend also.

Lets see if a few 3" Federal 000 buck don't budge it.:D

The Nordic Components mag clamp won't work well with the DMW mag extension. The DMW extension is too small in diameter.

Yes, your gun stands an excellent chance of being seriously damaged if you bump the mag extension against something hard. You need a mag clamp. Get one from DMW.

Here's a better pic just snugged down. I'll start crankin 1/4 turn a side and see if it moves.

This a Wilson Combat 2 shot. Who's DMW Chris?
Locktite isn't an option, i swap my 26" vent rib on here sometimes and the extension comes off.

One more note this is aluminum if you tighten to much you will trash the threads easy.

DMW = Daves Metal Works

I bought his 7 shot extension. Works nice. Fits 7 rounds in the tube, I used Fiocchi 2 3/4" buck and Remington 2 3/4" buck as well. some discussions mention that some brand of 2 3/4"shells will only fit 6 in the tube (Winchester and Federal come to mind if I recall the discussions correctly).

Based on this discussion link that someone posted earlier, I'm going to lose my clamp. I dont plan to be running around with my gun bumping into walls, rope, tree limbs, etc so I wont have to worry about the bumping my mag tube hard into anything. I mean the FN SLP is sold with an extension and it has no clamp on the barrel/mag tube so I would assume you can run mag extension tubes without any clamps and not encounter any problems (if you don't bump into anything).

The FN SLP doesn't have an extension. I looks like it has a tube extension but looks can be deceiving. It has a long one piece mag tube with a shorter tube sleeve that fits over the mag tube and a cap screws onto the mag tube to lock the sleeve down. The sleeve tube looks like a mag tube extension.

The SPX has a extension without a clamp and has no problems. You don't need a mag tube clamp unless you are running a very long tube extension on your shotgun.
