Ordered my brake last week after doing a ton of research. I finally settled on the Witt Machine Company model. First a little background. The rifle is a .308 built on a Savage action using a Shilen heavy varmint barrel. .816 diameter at the muzzle. I sent Witt the dimensions and a week or so later it shows up in my mail box.

Because I should have zigged instead of zagged in Nam, my right shoulder is held together with several anchors. Shooting a .308, which I love to do, really destroys me for a few days afterwards, so I only shoot 10 or so rounds at an outing. Well, I mounted the brake as Witt directed, only I didn't use the locktite on the barrel, only on the screws. Of course, it mounted extremely easily, why shouldn't it? It was a slide on and had plenty of clearance. Put it on, tightened the snot out of the bolts and took it to the range.

I didn't know how it would shoot, different POI? Groups opened up? I read all the stories, pro and con. Clamp on brakes are no good, they change the harmonics, etc. I figured if the harmonics changed I'd just do another ladder test and work up a new load. One of three things would happen, it would get worse, stay the same or get better (tough to do as it shoots really well now).

Ok, I fire the first shot and the recoil is less than my .223! Barrel doesn't even move. I fire another and the holes touch! Hmmm? Feeling pretty good now. Fire the third and I have a clover leaf. Nothing appears to have changed! I shot 35 rounds today but ran out of light. Recoil is non existent. Shoulder feels great! Later this week or early next I'll be taking it out to 300, then 500. I am really looking forward to shooting the way I want to again.

I have to say, Witt was great to deal with. He even gave me a military discount after I had already ordered and paid. We were talking about brakes and the military, and without a seconds hesitation was given a refund to adjust for the discount. I can honestly say, I will be spending a lot more time reloading for my .308.

My next clamp on brake will be purchased from Witt Machine too.
