I fire hundreds of rounds at my local club shooting trap. Although I have never patterned my shotgun with 7 1/2 shot. Mostly because I don't know what benefits it has to me. Should I try experimenting with new loads or keep rolling with the 7 1/2. It has been working pretty well for me.

If your breaking all the targets, keep what your doing. If not, try magnum shot and more of it. Then pattern. Pellets are deformed less if harder. A nice round pellet gives better patterns.

Well, I always pattern a new gun and/or barrel to be sure I know what the gun is doing. That way I know the errors are all mine. The objective is to get the biggest pattern you can with no holes to let a target get through at your shooting range. Usually I err on the side of a smaller pattern.

I have patterned my shotgun that I shoot and hunt with. That way I know what it is doing and not guessing. it just removes one less unknown if you are having a cold streak. You could probably test 5 popular brands and keep the targets (or shoot on steel and take a picture) and be done in 15 or 30 minutes. Given how quickly it is to do, I think it is worth the time.

i tended to over choke, not bad at a distance but a little of a handicap at close shots. i have been useing a imp mod extended choke with #8 shot with very good results for the last several years and yes go to the pattern board first. eastbank.
