i got into a trade deal today with me getting a few firearms and one was a american tactical calvalry o/u 410 with single selective triggers and ejectors and five choke tubes, new in the box made in turkey, it has decent checkering and figured wood and good metal finish. it is a light weight shotgun, 3" chambered. its not a B,K or P gun and will not last on the trap-skeet range but for the 200.00 i have in it i think i have a nice light briar patch 20-25 yard rabbit shotgun.eastbank.

Looks like a lot of fun for $200. The fit and finish on those ATI's is actually pretty decent compared to the other lower end O/U's.

For some unexplainable reason I have a desire to obtain a .410 O/U with perhaps damaged barrels that I cut down to 18 - 20 inches.

Thinking it would make a nice pack or truck gun with and cartridge adapter barrel of something like .22mag, .22 Hornet, for sort of a combo gun.

I have a Savage Model 24V that I purchased with damaged barrels and set it up by chambering it from .222 Rem to .223 Rem and have a chamber adapter to .22 RF . The 20ga. bottom barrel I modified for screw in chokes and have a rifled choke tube for it to shoot the sabot slugs besides the normal 20ga stuff.

I like this a lot, but a .410 would be lighter making it even more desirable for packing although a bit less power capability. Although not the worst night stand weapon with slug or buck.

At any rate the .410 is just a fun gun to shoot, and that in itself is reason enough to have one.

the 410 was thrown in on the trade deal to sweeten the pot, i have a 410 rem pump that i know is a better gun. but the idea of a little lighter two choked barrels that i can select made sense for some of the close shooting conditions for the brair patch rabbits. even a 28ga(i have a rem pump and auto) is a little to much gun there. i,ll run a hundred rounds thru it to loosen it up and check patterens with the five chokes to see what ones will give me the patterens i need for 15-25 yards. eastbank.

I'm not sure why - (poverty, or region) - but we never used anything but .22RF on critters that couldn't fly.

All my rabbit and squirrel hunting was done with a rifle. The local Webb gas station would sell .22RF ammo by the individual cartridges so if all I had was a nickel or a dime I could still go hunting . I shot a used Remington Model 510 Targetmaster bought for $7.00 . I learned to shoot rabbits on the run, and do quick shots on squirrels as they landed on a different branch.

Hunting them with small bore shotguns seems like a lot of fun but it is something I never grew up with.

Good luck with that little O/U as it appears to be great fun. My hunting days have been over for awhile. Do enjoy the sports while you can.

i use .22,s on tree rats, but in the heavey briars a small shotgun gets the job done with out filling them full of shot and shots are close, 25 yards would be a very long shot, with most being much closer. eastbank.

Ah, the .410, love 'em. I have a little single, break action Steven's model 94F that my wife gave me for Christmas in 1968. I have fond memories of hunting squirrel and rabbit with it. 3", #6 or #4 was my choice of loads. My favorite way for hunting rabbit, cotton-tails, was to walk along with the gun held more like a pistol. I was a lot stronger then than now! When a rabbit jumped up, I could one-handedly drop it quickly. Very seldom did I miss one. I still have the little .410, and it's been through a lot. But it still won't drop open when I thumb the lever for it to open. It's still tight enough that I have to give it a little upward jerk to get it to open. Been one of the finest little shotguns I've ever had. I've got a couple of 20s and a 12 pump, but I still like the little .410!
