CMMG Bargain Bin 20" HBAR

Has anybody ordered one of CMMG's 20" HBAR rifles? Is the HBAR too heavy to tote around as a hunting rifle? Would it come with a bayo lug? Any comments on this setup would be appreciated. Thanks THR.

The best info I can ,give is the rifle has a 1/9 twist,non chrome lined bore and weighs around 9 pounds.Yes the rifle comes with a bayo lug.If your going to be lugging the rifle around all day may I suggest the m4.The m4 will give you just about the same accuracy as the 20" with a slight loss in velocity while giving you the package at about 2 pounds less.

I have one I put together, mostly from J&T.

The 20" HBAR is not light, but it's definitely luggable. It is very easy to shoot accurately offhand, IMO. It shoots well, it's fun, and it's accurate. It's not a Bull Barrel or anything; mainly, it has more steel in the barrel under the handguard than the Government Profile version. It balances forward a bit; I think that this is part of what makes it hold steady.

If you get a single upgrade, I recommend that you get a nice trigger.

Of course, you can get a trigger later. There's a lot to be said for getting a rifle, shooting it, and THEN deciding what expensive doo-hickeys you'll buy for it.

Has anybody here on THR actually purchased one of these from CMMG? I was under the impression that the 20" brrl length is desirable in order to achieve sufficient fragmentation when using FMJ.

20" barrel will give you more velocity. Heavier barrel with longer sight radius will give you more practical accuracy.

I got the thing because I want to use it as a rifle, i.e. to shoot targets at a fair distance. A carbine works fine, too, for its intended uses -- e.g. the Army uses carbines, the Marines use rifles.. The bullet just won't be going as fast, but that probably doesn't matter if you're thinking about the ranges involved in defensive use. At over 200 yards, it's probably called "murder", not self-defense.

The bullet slows down as it flies, either way. So, say a particular bullet mushrooms, fragments, or whatever, at 2000 fps or higher. That translates to some distance from the muzzle; the faster it's going at the muzzle, the farther away it will still be going 2000 fps.

Short answer, no. Long answer, depends on the man carrying it. My 700P is 10 or 11 lbs (deer, yotes, elk, liberals) and my savage 12LRPV is 13lbs (squirrels, prarie dogs, liberals).

I suppose if you had a bullet that didn't properly fragment when fired 200 fps slower, but why are you concerned about wether or not a fmj is gonna fragment? If you want what you're shooting to explode, you wouldn't be shooting fmj's.

It just seems to be a good price for a 20" AR.

Remember, you have to spend a lot of money to get a good product, so try and find something thats over $1000 and it'll shoot sub moa and have a lifetime warranty and be able to do your taxes (I'm joking, of course). I took a look at the CMMG site and it seems like the re-furbs are a smokin deal if you don't mind a few dings in the recievers, which is one of the few parts that isn't new on em from what I can tell. Try one out; if it isn't accurate, try different ammo. If that doesn't work, stick it in the gun safe until your kids are ready to shoot, or you need the cash or the Dem's put another AWB in place and sell it.

1:7 is needed to stabalize bullets that are 69 grs and over. If you aren't going to need to shoot anything that heavy, there isn't really a need.

Driving a jeep to a blind is one thing, backpacking a few thousand feet up from the trailhead is quite another, no matter what man you are.

It's hard to think of a high mountain hunt that would best be done with an AR carbine, though.

I have a CMMG Lower with a 20" Colt HBAR Flat Top 1/9 twist. It has a carry handle with A2 sights.
I can shoot dime size groups at 100 yards with 55 grain Black Hills Blue Box Soft Points all day long with the iron sights.

I got the feeling from the website that the rifle internals are all new, just the recievers themselves, possibly the barrels were not. All in all they look like a screaming deal if you're like me and already have way to much invested in your bolt guns.

My first 20" was a HBAR. After my first hunting trip of toting it around I regretted the HBAR. Sold it soon thereafter and never looked back.

It left a bad taste in my mouth. I would never have an HBAR again...

I was on a forum somewhere where one of the posters stated that CMMG was going to stop the bargain bin program.

If you want a 20" rifle you might want to consider getting the order in soon.

CMMG is a reliable, well respected company. I have heard nothing bad from anybody that ever ordered from them. They say it like it is, their rifles are no beauty contest winners but will be reliable and accurate. It seems that is what you're looking for and I would suggest you get your order in soon. The bargain bin rifles are the best deal around.

I just picked up the 16" M4 profile last week, it's awesome. I am positive the barrels are also new, mine doesn't have any real dings in it, it looks and feels new, is solid, no play between receivers, and the pins come out very, very easily. I'm used to knocking on them with my knuckle, but with mine I can just push on it and it will come out.

They are a great buy, and if the program is ending soon, then buy one as soon as you can. Don't worry too much about them being listed as used, they are LNIB.
