Just got this update from the CMP

CMP has a small quantity of the .308 Specials. This is a completely refurbished rifle consisting of an original M1 Garand Springfield or HRA receiver, new production Criterion barrel, new production American Walnut stock and handguards, and new web sling. Receiver and most other parts are refinished USGI, but some parts may be new manufacture. Receiver may have pitting. A .308 spacer block is installed to prevent the loading of a .30-06 round into the chamber.

Never got anything through the CMP. I assume being a vet would qualify as an "affiliated organization"?

All affiliated organization information is on their web site. There are even clubs that will let you join via mail for a nominal on line membership fee, meeting the requirements.
If you think you want one time is probably limited in ordering one before they are out of stock again.
If you miss ordering one this time you may want to get your paperwork in so there is no delay next time.

For a good Affiliated Club as well as an interesting and valuable resource, consider the Grand Collectors' Club (theca.org). You can join online for $25/yr and they'll send your membership info to CMP each year to keep you current with CMP. Their magazine is well done and informative and their annual convention is a good one for M1 buffs. I recommend it highly.

Now I'd recommend if you use them, print a copy of your receipt to send with your purchase application and express mail if you want to get in line for a rifle. CMP has, in the past, simply tossed all orders received on any given day into a single group without regard to time of receipt, but does separate by day. Thus, snail mail will likely get in a later group than an express mail. The early bird is more likely to get the worm.

Update:
Submitted the paper work last week, rifles shipped today.

The folks at the CMP are pretty great.

The timing makes it my 5yr anniversary rifle... So now it's extra special.

I love my wife.

Glad someone could pick one up.
I just shot mine in a Semi- Auto Vintage military match last weekend. Kinda cool with 20 rifles on the line, mostly Garands and you hear the clips releasing - PING. Match was 5 volleys of 10rds, so one reload each volley.

I make a point of scanning the cmp forums site once a day and carefully read through all the postings about the one weapon I'm interested in - that old war baby... Never know what will surface in the way of a comment or a tidbit of info or advice. I go by their south store (just outside of Anniston, Al) every now and then so it pays to keep current. Besides, those old carbines are just.... interesting, period.

They also have a great classified section for anyone with an interest in old military weapons, parts, and ammo.... Here's their website... http://forums.thecmp.org/index.php

I know many are only interested in garands (particularly since they rarely ever have carbines to offer these days...).
