Checking the CMP site this morning I saw they are not accepting any more orders for Greek FG's. RG's still available. I guess the clock is ticking on the Garands. I just sent my order for a FG Sunday night. So I'm not sure where I stand on actually receiveing my M1. A nybody have any experience with being placed on the "back order" list. what's the shortest and longest period anyone has had to dwell on the "back order" list?

Wow. They seemed to have so many when I went to the South Store last year. People must be buying them up. I wonder how many people have used up their 12 rifle allotment already.

Oh darn ... and I'm still waiting for membership card from GCA to arrive.

You didn't have to wait for it. The GCA sends an updated list of members to the CMP regularly (monthly, iirc). You could have sent in your order and the CMP would have checked against their list of GCA members.

The GCA only recently started making membership cards.

Back ordered since Nov11 2006

I have been waiting quite a while. They sent the surplus .30-06 ammo a while back but the rifle is still out there. When I called to check because I noticed that they had quit selling the kind I ordered a week later she said the order was in but it would be 90-120 days. It will be 90 days next week so I will probably call next week.

I'm sorry that everyone who wanted one didn't get one, but at least they didn't go to the crusher. There's a lot of Garands out there getting shot regularly, competing in matches. Heck, they have a whole annual competition named after John Garand. That's a beautiful thing.

Every time I think about all those M14s... :fire: :banghead:

They'll be a few left--everyone is carbine happy now. I hope they get every fricken' M-1 Garand and Carbine they can into US private citizen hands.

This may be the swan song--and may be the last chance for the box fed little gun. They have to get them out before any possible AWB comes up again.

My wife said today--more ammo or another rifle. I had to say the ammo. But I WANT another Garand even if it's an ugly duck.

From their website:

How does the CMP know if I am a GCA member?

IF you indicated “yes” on your membership application to release your information to Civilian Marksmanship Program, you will be included in our weekly file transfer to CMP. The current GCA member roster is sent to the CMP on a weekly basis, normally this happens on Monday. If your membership was received and processed on Friday, the CMP will have a record of it the following Monday, even before your new member packet reaches you through the mail.

Yeah, they did you a favor by selling them 12 at a time to gun dealers because they saved them from the crusher:rolleyes:. You can still get one from the gun dealers at least, you'll just have to pay a few hundred dollars more.

I was just in Anniston this past Saturday.

They are out of the Greek grades, but they are replacing them with the Danish. I bought a Greek Field grade about a month ago at Camp Perry. This week I got sent to Birmingham on business, so I thought I would make the trip to Anniston. I'm glad I did, I found a Danish Field grade that had a muzzle of 1+ and a throat of a 2. I should have it in a day or so, as I remember the stocks were very dark, but I will either clean or replace them. Either way, I am happy with both of my Garands. I just can't wait until I can get them out and shoot them.

Would the Danish Garands be field or rack grade? Anyone knows when these will be available?

If there'll be more field grade in the near future, I think I'm gonna hold out.

Hooray! More guns that will escape the claws of President Clinton in January 2009!

One of Bill Clinton's first official acts was to begin destroying ammunition at Jefferson Proving Ground. He managed to destroy tens of thousands of guns in Alabama (they used to sell cut up S&W M10s as paperweights at Knob Creek). He sent tens of thousands of M14s (which we could be using now in Iraq and Afghanistan) to the Baltic States (so they could not be reimported as per the SSA of 1968).

This is not a bad thing. If the CMP sold out of any and all guns tomorrow, it would be a strategic victory for us.

So that's where those were from! I remember seeing those last year in one of the stalls next to the pole barn...a whole table full of cut-up, rust-covered smashed up gun parts. Couldn't figure out why anyone would want one.

Just checked my bank account online. The check I signed on Jan. 31 for a Greek Field Grade has been cashed! I take it (that is, I hope!) this means I got in under the wire with my order. Now to see how long it takes to get here. . . .

:)

Seminole:
Congrads, it looks like you did indeed slide under the wire. I hope I'm as lucky too. Has anyone seen one of the Danes, or have pics? What would the difference be, ther than possible different stock replacement? Is the price the same? if you order a Greek FG, and they run out, would they automaticly send a Dane FG? A lot of questions I know, I guess with the recent weather I might be getting GCF  (Garand Cabin Fever)

The nice thing is that I have one of the Greeks FG and then the Dane FG came yesterday. As far as the stocks, the Greeks are oversized and the fit and finish has a lot to be desired. I will probably replace the stocks on this one. The Dane the stocks are definitely older and need more TLC, but they are walnut (I think) and fit A LOT better. I probably will just refinish them.

My understanding of what CMP will do about replacing the Greek FG for the Danes, is that they will give you the option whether you want to or not. As far as the pricing, I can only tell you that I paid the same thing for both. Whether that will be the way it stays, I don't know.

Hope that helps

BTW, the Dane has a VAR barrel on it. (a bonus that I didn't even check on.)

I have heard of the VAR barrel, but not exactly sure what makes it so special. Is it due to it's performance, or that is is simply a rarer barrel type for the M1. Are all the the Danes fitted with one?

VAR barrels were made by a Danish arsenal as replacements on a need be basis for the original US supplied ones when they were deemed unserviceable. Not all M1 rifles returned by the Danes have VAR barrels, as many of them still have the US issued barrels.

The VAR barrel is considered by some to be superior in quality/accuracy to the US military original barrels.

OK, so now I'm getting antsy!

As I posted above, I mailed the order for a Greek FG on Jan 31 or Feb. 1. The CMP cashed my check and it posted to my bank account on Feb. 13. I have yet to hear anything from them directly.

How long does it usually take to hear from them about an order? I don't mind waiting for the actual rifle to get here, but I am DYING to know whether my order did, in fact, get in before they sold out of the FGs.

I thought about e-mailing customer service, but I understand they're doing the best they can and I don't want them to take time away from processing orders to answer a stupid newbie question.

Took me about 2 weeks till I got notice my order was being processed. Then it said it could take another 21 days after that.....

Next order took 3 week till I got the notice.

CMP will always cash your check when they open the mail to prevent losing it. They will send you a email with a password so you can check progress of your order.
