good morning!

I'm taking a trip near the CMP South Store and would like to pick up a Special Grade M1. Does anyone know if they are available for in-store purchase? I would have posed this question at the CMP forum, but it's been a few days since I applied for a login.

thanks!

It might take some doing to get your registration confirmed. I had to email them and ask again. Do you use Gmail?

Here is what they told me:

they didnt have any specials when we went back in march.

they did however have service grade springfields that you would swear were new if you didnt know any better.

let me know if you want and i will post some sample pics of what we were able to get off the service grade rack.

always my pleasure !!!!!!!:D:D:D:D

below is the first target i ever shot with the rifle (actually bought 2, they are nearly identical) the bottom group was the first ever, then the upper one was after adjusting the elevation.

the next is my best at 200yds with a s&k scope mount. although i was shocked at the accuracy, the mount was going to scratch up the receiver because brass was deflecting off the scope and back into the charging handle and receiver so i have decided not to use it anymore.

i actually began my quest for my m1's intending to get either special grades or correct grades, but when i saw the condition of the service grades, i decided they were good enough for me. i just wanted a couple of shooters that were also nice to look at.

and just for kicks,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

FlyinBryan- that Garand is spectacular! Based on your pics, I wonder then if it's worth the extra dough for a special grade?

thx bennadatto!!!!!!

the way i see it, if you have to mail order, the special is the way to go, but if you can actually go, and spend some time there, service or even field grade is the best value.

just make sure you borrow a muzzle gauge from the staff there (you leave your drivers license with the desk, then when you turn the gauge back in, they give the license back)

go through the rifles. they are situated on the racks so that you dont even have to pick them up, just walk down the rack and when you come to the very good ones, check the overall condition, and im sure you will get out of there with a keeper. (ours gauged between 1 and 1.5 each (well within collector grade specs!!!

CMP South Store hasn't had any Service Grades since they re-openned in April. According to the forum they are so backlogged with mail order Service Grade requests they don't know if or when they will have any on the sales floor. The best bet, if you want to avoid a 3 to 6 month mail order wait is to get there early Wednesday AM, and find a good field grade and get a new stock.

Your BEST bet is to pick up the phone and call them! Don't waste time asking here or other forums, or sending emails. I called last week to check on an ammo order, and was told that if you walked in the stores, you can walk out with what you wanted. If you order it, it'll be 6 months.

Sure wish I lived closer, but it's probably a good thing I don't.

I got registered an login at CMP within hours???? Bad news, sounds like both stores only have Field Grades....when asked when more Service Grades....not anytime soon, an no Specials.....wondering if they will get anymore in, or if this is it??
Could be mail orders are taking them all ....asked, but can't get an answer from them on that.....good luck...

You can walk out with ammo...but believe both stores are out of .30 carbine ammo....they are getting alot of nice carbines in right now, real nice from what I hear, if you want nice carbines they say now is the time to get them.

FlyinBryan....see you found an liked Garand Poster!

HA, Got the Garand poster on my desktop also.

I was at the North Store last Wednesday, and there were no service grades. If there was, I probably would have walked out with one. Plenty of carbines and a better selection of M44's than I expected. I don't know about carbine ammo, but they had plenty of HXP.

Tim the Student.....was told in month of July at N. Store, when the have the tournements, they usually put out the "nice" stuff....I'm going back over then to look, maybe some Service Grades or more nicer Field Grades will pop up...but all rifles go to the S. Store first.....

Yeah, I think I Orest posted that on the CMP forum. Good luck, I'm sure you will get a nice one then. I'd like to go back then, maybe I will see you there.

What do you mean "all rifles go to the S. Store first"?

wow!!!!

i went on the wednesday before the 2 week closing in march and there were service grades out the wazooo.

well, maybe not out the wazoo but there were probably 30-40 springfields (which is what i really wanted. there were probably the same amount of h&r service grades.

there was a small rack of 10-15 winchester rack grades.

im sure glad i went when i did. i was actually really sweating, worrying they wouldnt have what i was after and i would drive across 4 states for nothing.

it was a journey of faith i suppose.

Tim the Student....was told by the crew at N. store, that when shipments come in, they arrive at the S. store. From there, S. store sends shipments up to N.store....don't know how they decide what comes up or how they sort....?.....ya FlyinBryan, you hit it just in time the way it sounds, you may of gottin the last of the good Service Grades....hope not, if you know what I mean....I wonder how many of the 6 million Garands are left to be sold to the public????

Interesting, 61chalk.

At least they still have them available for mail order. I really need to win the lottery or something so I can build up a decent collection before they are all gone.

I am about 3 hours(one way) to the N. Store, is it worth it to go and hand pick a garand instead of mail ordering it?

And where is the south store?

I certainly would go. I just did, a bit more than 9 each way. You can be back in time for dinner, and will have had a really good experience to boot.

I got a field grade that guaged less than 2 with their guages, and TE less than 1. The wood was beat way up, but it is a war stock. I also got an M44 that is cleaning up very nicely, and shoots great. If you go, you can find exactly the rifle you are looking for. Or at least the closest thing there to it. IMO, it beats hoping they paid attention to your sticky to get you a good bore, good metal, good wood, whatever.

If someone else wanted to go, I would go again, even if I had no plans of buying something.

All of the staff was amazingly helpful. As were all of the other customers. I cannot say enough good things about the CMP, and I'm sure others will echo that. If you don't know really what to look for, others will be more than happy to help you out.

The south store is in Alabama.

AnthonyC.....I too am about a good 3 hrs away from N. Store...went for first time on April 1st...got 2 Field Grade, SA Garands from Oct an NOV of 1942, serial numbers were close, wood was ruff, gauges 1.5 an 2.0 at muzzles, bought new CMP wood for one an its looks great an shoots even better, if your not sure, ask the crew this is the first time buying or looking an I'm sure they will help you..I did some research on CMP an here at THR to get some ideas what to look for, for me, I got the serial numbers an dates so I could find ones from WWII....it was a great day...if you haven't seen this thread check it out, an the picture....

got to find it first an then will post..!

in my opinion, yes, absolutely.

it was over 10 hrs for me and it was easily worth it.
