Awright, I can't stand it any longer......
I'm gonna leave the Rat-1 in my laptop case and carry the Coast for a few days, more if I like it. Stand by for further news.

Yeah, I did the multi-point shakedown before pocketing the knife- clean, lube, check all the fasteners for proper tightness, and orient the clip properly (I prefer tip-up). Never really used the knife today, but it rode comfortably and stayed put.

I picked up one.
There was about 15 available. I went back a few days later and they were all gone. I know they all didn't sell because there was no display, they were mid-isle and the price was wrong. There was also a few put in the wrong spot because there was so many.
I checked 4 other stores, all gone. And this was Christmas Eve, so the sale was still on.
I spoke to several employees, none knew what I was talking about.
At the last store I finally spoke to the department manager. He was unaware of the sale as well. He told me they were not a permanent product, that when the knives came in he created a UPC for them. He said any remaining knives were removed by the night crew on Christmas Eve morning and shipped back with no explanation.

I thought it was odd because the sale was supposed to be good until the 1st. All of the stores had the knives removed and UPCs taken down. There's no longer a spot for them, only ones for similar Coast folders.
It sucked because I was going to pick up a few extras for some friends as presents. After handling it for a few days I thought it was a pretty good value. I was even willing to pay full price, but no dice.

That's odd because a friend bought 4 of them just a few days ago.

And they are still shown as $7.00 on Home Depots website.

I'm going in again tomorrow to see if our store has any left.

BTW: They never were in the Xmas junk aisle here near as I could tell.

They were in the tool department hanging on the Coast Knife display next to the hammers!

Nobody in the Xmas junk department knew what I was talking about either!

Update.

Swung by Home Depot today to check, and there are no more DX340's to be had.

Home Depot on-line tonight still shows them available for $7.00 with free store delivery though.

Thank goodness that the one that I bought for 26 bucks isn't one of the knives on sale for $7.00 - I don't feel so bad now. I bought the FX350 - which I think is a solid knife BTW.

Does anyone know which of these < $15.00 Coast knives is the easiest / quickest opening knives?

I bought a Tac-Force 803 based on this YouTube review, saying it was a good deal:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9ew5JZP8GI

And the reviewer was completely wrong. After about 4 minutes of me practicing (playing) with it, the thing loosened up so much it was ready to fall apart. I wasn't sure what I was going to do about it loosening up but the fifth day I had it the spring snapped. I have a loosey goosey spring assisted knife with no spring that costs more to ship back than the knife itself costs.

So I'm looking for another budget folder, hopefully one that can be opened in a flash.

I just don't know which of these Coast knives would be best for that.

Well, this one has a Spidyhole, and it can't be too slow if you carry it right point up.

I almost bought one the other day, but don't need any more knives.

You also should save up and buy a set of tiny-Torx drivers and some blue Lock-Tight or whatever if your knives fall apart and there is nothing you can do about it!

I don't recall ever buying a folder of any price or brand that didn't need a little TLC adjusting screws to my liking.

OK, here's my take on the knife, after using one for almost two weeks-

The clip was good, I never found the knife creeping out of my pocket. It's easy to deploy the knife, and to fold it back up. The steel is OK, it held an edge well. The grip texture is good, maybe even too aggressive. The serrations are WAY too aggressive, making it tough to cut cordage, strapping, cardboard, or webbing; a plain edge would have done the job more readily.

As I mentioned above, I went over the knife with Torx set, strop, and oil before pocketing it. I would do the same with a more expensive knife, even a custom folder.
Everyone who got one from me for Christmas is pleased, too. Bottom line, I didn't waste my money.

Mmmmmm?

Which model knife are you talking about?

The DX-340 most everyone is talking about in this thread doesn't have serrations.

I'm referring to the BX309, which is the one that our local HDs were selling at the magic $7 price point. The DX340 was going for closer to $10.

I was down at the local HD this morning and they had some of the FX416 knives for 6 bucks. Yes, I bought one... :)
This is a big knife and will probably live in my truck though. Seems pretty solid with the frame lock too.

I cut myself on my Coast knife :(

I can definitely attest to the fact that these things are sharp.

I picked a FX416 up from Home Depot because it was such a good deal.

I wanted to try it out so I used it to cut up some Italian sausage, instead of just dumping the pieces of sausage from the cutting board, I scooped them up with my hand and on the second pass I caught my right ring finger knuckle on the point of the FX416.

I actually caught it on the tip and from the back side of the blade - not the sharpened side, but the point is very sharp and it gave me a 1/4" cut on my knuckle.

Ouch.

I don't usually cut myself on blades, the last time I cut myself was changing the blades on a potato slicer / mandolin. Probably only the second time I've cut myself in over 20 years.

I was out working down by the creek yesterday and that 416 was pretty useful cutting some branches and other impromptu trimming. It's a hefty "pocket" knife but proving to be handy to have around. Good value so far, we'll see how it holds up...?

Well, after almost a month and a half of EDC with the DX340?
I am still impressed!

I open mail, cut up cardboard for recycle at least once a week, and use it for everything else.

And right now?

Two swipes on a crock stick and it will still shave hair or stick in a thumb nail.

It holds an edge far longer, and is easier to touch up then my D-2 or AST-34 knives that cost many times as much!!

The down side on mine is the liner lock can be overcome with enough force on the back of the blade.
Even with the lock engaged.

But, I don't often use the back spine of the blade to over-power the lock anyway.

Still far & away the best $7.00 knife I ever bought in my life!

Been using my FX411 every day. Seems I can sharpen it unusually well, I always have trouble sharpening knives. I work at Home Depot, use that knife all the time. Certainly not an "approved safety knife" though, so I gotta watch for snooping eyes.
