what are your thoughts about the cold steel bushman? they look like they might make a good rugged knife to cary around in the woods and not be afraid to take a hack at something with, since i am going up to my papa's land soon and i want to take a new knife. and the price is right too:D

questions:
how thick is the blade? (exact customary measurement would be appreciated)
how much does it weigh?
what is the handle like? (welded or is there a gap where the edges meet?)
can i get your general opinion on it?

exact measurements can be had on the cold steel website. http://www.coldsteel.com

it's a pretty good knife for the money. it's lightweight and sturdy.

however, in my experience it lost it's edge pretty quickly. make sure you bring along a way to sharpen it if you plan on hacking a lot of brush.

It's a good knife for the money. There is a seam where the socket is folded over, at least on the three that I've seen. The sheath is a simple "mountain man" pouch type, and is not of very good quality leather. For $12 though, what would you expect?

As a general utility blade it is ok, but I prefer a smaller blade for general use and bumming around the woods.

Sharpdogs is right, a Swedish style knife would probably serve you better. I like the Carbon Steel Clippers myself.

I've dealt with Ragnar several times and have been very happy with his level of service.

Cold Steel also makes a smaller version of the Bushman as well, which might be a better fit for the task. I myself like the Bushman design, and it is probably the only mass production hollow handle knife that I would put faith in due to the one piece design. However, I haven't and don't own one, due to blade length. Unless I'm hunting or fishing (I don't trap), I can't carry over a 4" in my home state.

That leads into my question for the thread. How much do you guys think it would cost due to a little cutting work and sharpening and bring either a Bushman or the smaller version Cold Steel offers down to just under 4", while maintaing the basic profile? (If somebody here has interest in working on that project, cheap, PM me and we'll talk!~)

The bushman is a very tough knife, but looses it's edge quickly. Think of it as an emergency spearhead that can be used as a knife.

Ragnar carries some knives with 3 3/4 inch blades that would work for people in mp510's position. Easier than reconfiguring a Bushman.

I have one in my collection but haven't used it yet. I like it and looks very sturdy and will do the job.For the price its not bad at all..Also you can make it a spear for sticking 4 or 2 legged if you get bored:neener: Anyway, But like what they've said if your going to bring it in the woods make sure to bring a sharpener for.. Any knife;) .
Take care and be safe

Best $10 knife I ever bought. Get some leather lacing to wrap the handle and plan on buying or making a better sheath--but the knife is an excellent skinner if a little large.

Cold Steel makes good stuff.

Cold Steel lists them as $30 something dollar knives now ... but I've seen them go for as little as twenty at MidwayUSA.com

They were a great deal at $10.00, a decent deal at $15.00 and a fair deal at $19.99 I suppose.

They are not worth $20.00 or more imho.
