Guys there is an urban hunter up on ebay right now, what is a reasonable price? I have tried to buy an urban shiv for some time but I may have to make do.

Thanks,
Dave

well im seeing them go from anywhere from $70-80 new.....

in used condition.....ide expect to pay around $50.

Wow. If there was ever a knife name that screamed mall ninja!, urban hunter is probably it.

Cold Steel makes good knives. Many of their knives sell for more than $150; if it is something you really want and it is rare and that price seems reasonable, go for it.

I have a small knife collection and I really want the AUS8 version of the recon 1, right before they switched to the new model I passed up a $75 offer for one on ebay, now they are over $300 - one day I will own one.

Here's another

btw- the one on ebay doesn't appear to come w the sheath - I would pass. Google it, I saw a couple of other forums offering them.

Most folks here would probably say Cold Steel makes decent to good knives. The problem a lot of us especially have, is that Cold Steel tends to use a lot of other people's designs, often without credit...which is why you may see it rendered here as Cold Steal. ;)

I also personally don't like the head of the company, and in an industry filled with friendly, helpful people, that's a reasonably important consideration.

+1 to John.

What JShirley and HSO said x 10.

I have never handled anything Cold Steal that felt like it was worth more than $40.

Remember , Cold Steel actually makes NOTHING. They are a marketing company plain and simple.

And as mentioned most designs are either someone elses or modified versions of someone elses.

Like Jim said , it aint worth no where near $150.

I was not aware of all this. I don't own one but was on the brink of buying a couple. Thanks for the info guys- I will not be supporting them.

*Correction: Don't spend $150 on that knife. ;)

Hey, we didn't mean to sound critical of you. When I first began getting into quality knives, I bought the hype, too. I bought several CS knives for myself, and gave them away as gifts to friends and family.

As I learned more, I bought fewer CS products. Some of their offerings can be found at a discount, and sometimes they offer a very fair return for the investment. The market is just too filled with nice guys making quality products for reasonable prices to support CS much, though.

Hope that clarifies. :)

Thanks, I appreciate the clarification. I did not take anything offensively, I joined this forum to learn what I don't know - I always appreciate constructive criticism :)

I am a big fan of (and own some of) CRKT, benchmade and SOG (As far as I know, they all give credit to their makers). I'm in that mid-range (although they all make high end) until I can afford Carson (I have a couple CRKT collabs), Blackwood, Elishewitz, etc.. the higher end stuff.

I will not be purchasing from CS after what I've heard. Thanks again.

Get one of the makers that participates here to build a knife to your liking. No point paying custom prices for a production knife.

I own numerous Cold Steel knives. My experiences with Cold Steel are either extremely satisfied... OR total piece of junk. I've got rid of the junk and have held on to two that I feel are very high quality and worth keeping.

I looked at the cold steel urban hunter/urban shiv and for 150 bucks I would say WAY TOO MUCH!!! Probably a solid hunk of steel, but equally good hunks of steel can be had for far less ca$h.

Of course this is just my oponion and you know what's said about oponions... That's right we all have one.

some of Cold Steal's knves are outstanding knives for the money...while others are outlandlishly overpriced pieces of garbage. the trick is figuring out which is which. i've managed to whittle down my CS collection, and i've only kept the ones that either perform like heroes, like my Gurkha or Twistmaster, or are just fun to play with, like my old Triple Action.
