collapsible baton?

Doesn't this apply to all non-firearm weapons?

To a degree yes. But, due to the design of a baton it requires significantly more effort to do damage than an impact weapon such as a sap/blackjack. Additionally a knife can inflict sever damage in either a swinging motion or a straight in stabbing motion with VERY little "wind-up" necessary. And of course none of this applies to chemical based force options (although having an amount of distance between you and the badguy is HIGHLY recomended in this case as well).

I suspect that the ASP isnt going to be with the police for much longer, at least not as a useful tool. Typically it was used when a person was posing a threat but in a passive manner (ex. a man standing in place with a broken bottle in his hand who isnt responding to comands but isnt attacking either). It is good for disarming and enforcing pain complaince in such a situation. but, i think that the TASER is going to quickly replace it in this role since it is a much better choice for that tast. What police need is a decent weapon for use when they get jumped from behind or get stuck grapling with someone and cannot access their firearm (this why a lot of oltimers were REAL upset when they took away their saps).

Had a case a while ago where a mentally ill guy got into a fight with a couple deputies- one of those things where he was unarmed but wouldn't quit fighting no matter what they tried. By the end of the fight he had a broken arm and the deputies had bent ASPs. They said they were going to go back to wooden batons rather than get new ASPs.

I frequently carry an oak or apple wood walking stick- no legal issues and better than an ASP in a fight.

To carry something in the car for "non lethal" use a four or five cell maglight is very good, relatively inexpensive and effective. Our cars all carry one plus mine and my sons carry a Hart 25 oz Framing hammer, one you get to use one of these tool for while you understand its usefullness,
The picks (the part you use to pull nails) are sharp and not curved, meant to be driven in to wood either like an adze to remove bits to make things fit or to be driven in to lift and allow you to get your hands under big beams to help move them. Although I have a CCW my son does not and this will give him some edge if he needs it. I have stressed to him the best option is to get out of that situation if at all possible, because if a kid approached me with a hammer I might have to shoot him and I do not want him getting shot over something minor(or major for that matter)

what about an asp baton in your dominate hand and a knife in your non dominate hand?

in the event you can't stop somebody at mid range with the baton you have another weapon brandished.

If he is a big enough threat to warrent a knife then you might as well just shoot him. A knife is a deadly weapon in every court in the land and there are few ways to employ one in a manner that is even remotely guaranteed not to kill someone, even strikes to the extremeties can hit big enough blood vessels to make someone bleed out in short order. A knife is an excellent weapon when you need deadly force but, cant for whatever reason carry a gun. It is NOT a less than lethal option though.

If you were in a country or a situation where you could carry both of those tools but not a firearm then that would be an excellent combination though IMHO. But, since we are in the states there are much better options when it comes to deadly force.

c yeager

well truth be told i am only 18 (almost 19! :)) and i can't carry a gun legally yet. I'm not even sure if i can own one, let alone get a CCW. So yes a knife may be a deadly weapon, and an ASP baton may be a deadly weapon. But nothing throws up more flags then somebody carrying a gun (even if i DO live in KY).

on a side note, a couple days ago a 'friend' of one of my old friends confronted me at the local wal-mart trying to start some trouble. I had both weapons on me just in case :)
