Color Pictures of when the French used to fight

Very interesting...

For some reason, every time I envisioned WWI I could never see blue skies until now.

Very cool pics, is the source trustable (though I don't know why anyone would want to fake them).

What conflict would we be viewing here? I would think WWI, about 10 years after color photography was invented, would have had more people taking such pictures.

It appears that it was shortly after these pictures were taken that the French began to wear their shoes backwards so the enemy would not know they were retreating.
Only 8 or so pics loaded. Bummer.

Not a pic of a Frog with his hands up in the lot! Actually if you read about WWI it had to be a grim, nasty thing. Given France's history of contiually being invaded, maybe they have just learned to get along.

Talk about bringing history to life! Those look like they could have been taken yesterday. It's not just the color, but the clarity of the images. Really cool - thanks.

The quality is stunning. Not to mention the first pics of soldiers from the colonies, no doubt. We tend to forget how global that war was. Not to mention the battles that actually occured in Africa.

Amazing!

Any idea what the rifles are in the first photo are? I see the action and the front sights are covered for protection I presume. I have never heard of... uhm... Franco / Africans fighting in WWI. I'd like to hear any of the history of them.

And what the hell kind of storm did that train car in photo #35 go through! My lord that's a lot of bullet holes!

Those were pretty cool - wish the French would look at 'em too and remember who they used to be...

French troops were tough back then... you'd have to be to make up for that powder blue uniform.

Amazing photos. Great history.

8 mm Lebel rifles. The "horizon blue" uniforms were meant to blend in with the sky when seen by the enemy as the French troops attacked. At the start of the war French troops had red pants. There is a photo of Swiss troops armed with Schmidt-Ruben rifles.

Powerful photos, and I appreciate your sharing them. For some reason, seeing those times in color makes them much more 'real' for me.

And that guy standing at the pisser....just too funny. You'd have thought the photog would have tried catching the men at the supper table if he wanted to show "daily life" kinda stuff!

Note the architecture in the background, gents. We have lost a lot in this day and age of cubism and mass-production.

great pic's. Thanks for sharing. Liked the guy in the red hat. What a target. The train car used for target practice was cool also. At least that's what it looks like. Lota holes.

Agree about the architectural designs. Today's designers have no creativity in their buildings. All glass. Ugh!! :barf:

This would be the war in which half a million French troops went "on strike" while fighting within their own borders because they were tired of getting shot at, correct? I don't think things have changed all that much.

The French FOUGHT?

Who woulda thunk...

Fascinating Pics!

Anyone who is interested should pick up a copy of "The Desert Column" By Ion L. Idriess. It is a reduced version of the over 20,000 pages of diary that Mr Idriess (against the Sar'n Major's will and/or desires) kept during his WW1 days in the trenches of such places as Gallipoli over the span of 4 years. It is the only known record of that campaign written from the enlisted mans point of view. The original is on display at the War Museum in Sydney.

It is out of print but not too hard to find if you go to the usual places. Theres a www.abebooks.com that I like for stuff like that.
Thanx for the pics!
