Colt 22 Pistol & Target Model CC5140

I have one I bought new many years ago. As I recall Colt called it a Cadet for a while until another manufacturer (I forget who) claimed copyright infringement on the Cadet name, after which Colt renamed it the Colt 22.
They later came out with the target model which had a 6" barrel with a sight rail that had weaver slots that extended to the rear of the slide and had adjustable sights. This model came with a substantial price increase.
I later bought a target barrel/slide kit for it that came with a slide that had no rear sight so it would fit under the sight rail. I put a red dot sight in this barrel which makes it very fun to shoot. I convert it back and forth as the mood strikes. I got a long T handle hex wrench for the barrel removal screw that makes this job a lot quicker. Both barrels shoot very well.

I have always been pretty much a Ruger Mk.II kind of guy but was interested in he Colt Cadet when it came out. Only problem was I never saw any of them for sale at the local gun shops or at the gun shows either. Would like to know how well it does at the range.
I'm thinking maybe CZ might have had a hand in getting Colt to change the name from Cadet as they might have already had the naming rights with their Kadet .22 conversion for the CZ 75.

It was Iver Johnson that was using the name Cadet when Colt brought out their model.

I had the Target Model from new and never really grew attached to it for no particular reason. It was well made, hell-for-accurate and a pleasing shape. Just never tripped any .22 triggers for me once I got it.
Too, the lack of magazines on the market was quite disconcerting.
Not one damn thing wrong with the pistol, just not enough right to get me to set aside pistols like my Woodsman, Pre-Woodsman, DuraMatic or weirdo Model 80 JC Higgins.
To be fair and add context, I've sold on every single Ruger semi-auto .22 that I've had for the same reasons..... No joy for me.

ApacheCo Todd, I vaguely recall reading that the Colt 22 (aka Cadet) was mechanically similar to the High Standard Duramatic. Is there any truth to that?

I seem to recall great deal of similarities in design and ergonomics but it's probably difficult to get too far from the couple-three most successful .22 autos out there.
The entire *lower*/frame assembly is a synthetic without a metal frame, safety and cocked indicator are almost exactly the same. While the barrel on the Colt is not release with thumb screw, once the Colt's retaining bar was removed, the barrel lifted off the top just like a Duramatic and then the slide is removed forward on both. External extractors are almost identical....
A great many similarities in a general sense but I never compared the finer internal components or operation. The rather extreme grip angle seemed very alike too. One of the things I did not like about it.

Both are striker fired, unlike other Colt and HS .22s with concealed hammers.

I picked one up over the weekend for $309 at my local Cabelas Gun Library. Seemed like a decent deal, came with 2 mags which work with my Targetsman. The mags alone are now worth $80 on gun broker. You can buy cheap Beretta Neos mags ($25) and they work in the Cadet with no modifications (but do extend out slightly due to the longer base plate) or older Colt Woodsman variations with modifications to the base plate.MifflinKid

I have one that I got as a birthday gift from my wife.
It never showed the kind of accuracy I get out of my Ruger .22s. But I never experimented with a variety ammo either. Perhaps I'll give another try this Friday as I usually go to the range the day after Thanksgiving.
