I have a nice Colt Agent with original grips and a set of compac rubber grips. I want to trade it in on a S&W J-frame. Actually my wife wants to trade it on the J-frame as I gave her the the Colt but now she wants something a bit smaller.

What do you think, do I have a shot at an even trade for a say a 637? I keep hearing that the Colt Agent is worth about $400 but I don't know if they really sell at that price. A few years back, the S&W 637 could be had new for $299 everywhere.

You would be better off in the long run to hang onto that Colt and buy a J-frame for her.

You're gonna get skinned in a trade.

You are both probably right. I probably wouldn't be able to do an even swap like I want. The dealer would want to make $600 off the deal and I will wind up walking away.

I think I am better off just buying her the 637 and later selling the Colt. Colts seem to be going up in value lately so maybe in a few years, it will be worth selling. Or, maybe I will hang on to it.

It is a neat gun. i like that it is about the size of the J-frame but holds 6 shots. It is only an ounce or two heavier.

Keep the Colt
Before you jump into 637 visit the 638
I opine the 638; it can; if needed be used single or double action.
Makes an outstanding pocket gun and doesn't act ignorant when jerking out the pocket.
Sitting at a traffic light and unit close by; see something that concerns;
Cocked and ready.

I like Smiths, but I would never trade a Colt for one, assuming they are in similar condition. :uhoh:

Keep the Colt, you can buy a J frame anytime but the old colts are not made anymore and the price will only go up. Which model and generation is your Colt? Barrel shrouded or not?

No, not in this century. 20, 30, 40 years ago, yeah, if that's what you wanted instead. Colt is not making those, probably never will again, and Smith churns out Jframes. Just go buy one.

I had a similar choice to make a few years ago. I had a nice old blue DS. I wanted a stainless gun. I really liked the DS, and didn't want to sell it. So I kept it, bought the 642, and I'm very glad. Different niches.

WOW! Everyone says keep the Colt and that is what I shall do. In fact, I already made a deal with my wife. I have a S&W 642 and 38-2 so I let her have the 642 and I will keep the 38-2. I have carried the 642 for about four years and it is a good gun but the nickel pre-lock 38-2 I recently got is better for me. I prefer the 38 or 638 over all other J-frames.

I guess I didn't need two Airweights even though I wanted them. I am just glad to see my wife taking an interest in guns and shooting after almost 10 years of being together. She just got here lifetime CCW permit as well.

I don't love the Colt but I do like it. It is nice to have 6 shots instead of 5 and like others have said, it shoots much better than a J-frame.

Just an FYI, I have a nickle Colt Detective Spl with the original walnut grips and a Barami hip grip in 99% cond. and have turned down $600 for it about 3 months ago. Four years ago I was offered $450. Keep the Colt. :)

After much searching, I finally found a nice blued Colt dick special. All my other revolvers are S&W excepting the mateba. I've already turned down several offers for the Colt.

if you can only one of the guns youre asking about, take the S&W.

i say this because if you ever have to use the gun, the S&W will be far easier to replace, or if it were to need repair/warranty work, the S&W will be far easier to have that done......since "they" still make them and Colt is no longer offering service on their older D/A wheelys that need new parts....

now, if youre just going to look at the gun, maybe shoot it sparingly, and want something for the ego or pride of ownership, the Colt is the way to go....

bottom line, what do you think would be the best relaible bet in the long run to ride to work in? a 1929 Ford that is in mint condition or a used '05 Honda accord......Ford is still around but aint gonna help ya with that 1929 model.....just like Colt and thier D/A wheelys...

"Rule number 1: I don't sell Colts. I can trade a Colt, but only for another colt. Colts are keepers."

Colts are not that great. It is a nice gun but S&W makes better revolvers. The old P&R S&Ws are some of the finest revolvers ever made. Don't get down on S&Ws, they are great guns. I have a S&W 19-3 that is as smooth as oiled glass and shoots like a target pistol. The blued finish is great as well. I like Colts as well but I wouldn't say that they are better than S&W.

The best thing about Colts is that they sell for top dollar. I hope to be able to sell the Colt someday and make some money. For now, it makes a great carry gun, car gun and around the house gun.
