Could use some advise from the Colt connoisseurs.

Approximately how much is a Detective Special blued with wood grips worth. I believe it was made in the mid 70's. It has the ejector shroud. The gun looks fired very little but is not real clean...probably 95%. It looks as if it will clean up nicely.

The price is 450.00 down from 489.00.

Recommendations on price and history of the model would be appreciated.

Thank you.

The Detective Special was introduced in 1927, and was nothing but Colt's popular Police Positive Special with a 2" barrel. Over time it became THE classic snubby. They were produced in three series, the first having a full sized frame and round barrel without the shroud, the second with the same barrel, but a shorter frame, where the grip wrapped around the bottom, and the thrid that had the short-butt frame and a shrouded barrel. While they are excellent and exceptionally accurate revolvers, keep in mind that parts and skilled gunsmiths that can fix them are getting scarce, and this in not a gun that responds well to home gunsmithing.

$450.00 is at the top for a gun in the condition you describe, and I personally wouldn't go over $400, and might hesitate at that. But If you do overpay it won't be long before the value catches up, and in the long run I don't expect to see prices going down.
