Why do some colt SAA grips have holes in the center, and some do not? Maybe it's only replica's that do not. How do the hole-less grips stay on, just held on by the backstrap?

There are one-piece and two-piece grips.

Two-piece grips are held in by the screw that goes through them and can be replaced easily.
One-piece grips are held by the trigger guard and backstrap fitting into grooves on the front and rear of the grip. To change it, you have to remove the whole backstrap.

It's only a matter of unscrewing 3 screws if you prefer the look of the one piece grips.

Not difficult at all, and they sure do look nice without the screw through the middle.

Thanks all. So the SAA was originally produced with both grip styles? I need to pick up a book on these things.

Howdy Again

Originally the Single Action Army came with the one piece grip. Walnut. So did most of its percussion predecessors. Two piece grips came later. The first two piece grips were hard rubber.

Does anyone happen to know if colt grips fit on uberti SAA clones?

I'll just have to ask in another thread
