I have the chance to purchase a Trooper Mark III .357 from someone I have know a long time and trust. It was new in the mid 70s. I have not seen the revolver yet. I am told that it is in excellent condition except that the nickel plating needs a serious polishing. If the gun is in excellent condition, would anyone be willing to guess a fair price? thank you

Excellent condition and the nickel needs a "serious polishing"? That doesn't sound right.

If the plating is just smuged and dirty, then a "polishing" will clean it up. You really don't want to polish a nickle plated revolver such as you might a stainless steel handgun.

If the plating is intact, no bubbles or rust, and the only wear is perhaps on the cylinder (a line) and maybe a trace of holster wear, I'd say about $400-$425 would be a fair price. They sell for up to $500 in as new condition although you will hear that $500 is a bit on the high side and many will tell you about the one they bought two years ago for about $350. The rimfires sell for more.

Pay attention to the condition. Does it have original grips? Read the revolver check out sticky. The Mark III is a very good 357 revolver. It is my favorite.

A fine revolver. I love mine. I can't tell you what a fair price is, but I would give $300 for it in a heartbeat if the nickle is in salvagable condition. $400 and I would still be happy if it cleaned up real nice.

If the nickel has clouded then no amount of polishing will bring the luster back. Determine that before thinking of a price.

As others have already stated, a lot will have to do with the condition of the nickel plating (if it's the original factory finish). If the gun itself is just a little dirty and has some oil/dirt/powder residue on it, then a little Flitz metal polish will clean it right up and restore the shine to the plating. However, if the plated surfaces have begun to flake or peel, then there's not much that can be done to restore the finish. At that point, the gun would have to be refinished. Let us know how this gun looks and what you decide to do about getting it. My first DA revolver was a blued Trooper Mk.III; one very well designed and built revolver.

Thanks for the replys. For someone that is wonting to get back to shooting, I sold my last revolver about 25 years ago. I have already found a loy of useful info on this site. I will get to see the Colt next week when the owner travels to town to for Thanksgiving. he tells me he also has a SW Cheifs Special Model 37. I will post here to let everyone know the results of what the revolvers look like. mcbfl.
