I was perusing the Colt website this evening and landed on XSE. It looks different than it did a few years ago when I was exploring buying a 1911. The beaver tail now looks upswept and I recall that a few years ago it was more downward. Am I correct or nuts? I have no problem being called nuts so feel free.

Also is it a series 70 or 80? If it is an 80, how is the trigger. Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated.

Current XSE pistols have an upswept beaver tail grip safety, as opposed to the down swept duckbill grip safety previously used. They all have Series 80 style firing pin safeties.

I own a 2012 production Government XSE. It has been an excellent pistol so far. More accurate than I am, and 100% reliable with a wide variety of ammo. This trigger feel is about average for a 1911. Not great. Not bad. Mine breaks crisply at about 5 lbs. About the only thing that someone might find objectionable is that the trigger face has some up and down movement until you apply pressure, much like most of the S&W 1911s I've handled.

you're not crazy, they quit using a duck tail and started using a beaver tail a few years ago, My 2011 lightweight govt model has a good trigger, not great, but good. It's very well fit and finished, IMHO they are very good for the money. They are 80 series in the sense they have a firing pin block.
PS, it's beside me in the nightstand as I type this.

Colt is building the best pistols these days they ever have. The New Agent I had was as boringly reliable as a Glock, regardless of the ammo I used.

I have both types of grip safeties on two Colts that I bought around the same time a couple of years ago. Pretty much feel the same to me even with their different configurations.

Indeed. Many people like to denigrate the old duckbills, but most people who have actually used them don't have a problem with them.

It's irrelevant now though, since Colt has switched to beavertails on all the XSEs.

Is there a time frame or serial number structure that would allow me to tell if it was made after the changes were enacted were I to buy one online sight unseen?

That would be tough as I don't think they changed all the different models at the same time I saw 2011 commanders with the old safety shipped after I got my LW Govt.

No.

Colt did not instantly replace the duckbill with the beavertail on a some particular day. Duckbill- and Beavertail-equipped pistols shipped side-by side for a while.

It seems that Colt lets no part go to waste, and they used whatever happened to be in the parts bin.

Mine's a few years old and has the older grip safety. I like it quite a bit and love the trigger. Not like a custom by any means, but feels every bit as good as I remember from a couple of series 70s I once owned 30 years ago.

I agree with everything posted so far. The XSE has been through several variations, with the earliest having the duckbill grip safety and blade type three dot sights. Then they incorporated the Novak style sights, and most recently, the beavertail grip safety with the speed bump.

The first production model Colt I am aware of with the beavertail grip safety was the Combat Elite. Then these were incorporated in other models over time. Even the latest Defenders have the beavertail.

Colt is known for changing the specifications of a model over time. For instance, the early Combat Elites from back in the 80's had several variations. The very first ones had NM barrels and Pachmayr rubber grips. Then, the NM barrels went away, along with the Pachmayr grips. Then the blade sights were replaced by Accro sights.

My most favored Colt at the moment, is an early XSE with "duck-bill" safety and blade sights. It is one heckuva good gun! I use Wilson 47D's, because I like them, and no problems, mate! My bedside gun is a two-tone Rail Gun with the Viridian X5L green laser/light combo. Also an awesome gun!

As far as the grip safeties are concerned, I find no functional difference between the so-called "duck-bill" and the beavertail. To me, it's just cosmetic. Others may disagree, but that's how I feel. Depends on an individuals hands, I suppose. I have small hands, and either works just fine for me.

I have also managed to acquire a CQBP, and next, perhaps, will be a Special Combat Government Carry. Those are nothing short of awesome! I keep yearning for a Delta Elite with XSE specs. It will come, eventually, I think!

Even if it has a duck bill safety don't let it be a deal breaker Wilson makes a beaver tail that fits the earlier XSEs very nicely

I think the only Beaver Tail out there that really gives you a higher grip is the Ed Brown, installed with a lot of grinding to the frame.

I have a S80 Commander that came with the duck bill... I swopped it out with the Wilson drop in Beaver Tail (which still requires fitting, just no frame grinding).

I like the way the Wilson looks a lot better, but it didn't really give me a higher grip.

Duck bill grip safeties were just fine, but they lost a popularity contest with the Beaver tail.

Anyone have any info on the LW Xse commander? I think I should get a commander before I get another full size. Any issues? What mags don't hurt the aluminum frame? Thanks:)

Mine is a 38 super and is great accurate and functions great, I've been around guns for 40 years and never heard anubody hurting a alloy frame with a mag.

You want to stay away from magazines with "DEVEL" style followers in Alum Framed Lightweight Commanders.

Well learn something new all the time but the skeptic in me wonders just how much you'd have to shoot with an empty mag in the gun for this to be an issue as the only time the follower is that high is after the last round is loaded.
