Police name suspect in Ohio highway shootings
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Authorities identified a suspect Monday in a series of highway shootings around the city and are asking for help finding the man.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office said Charles A. McCoy Jr., 28, should be considered armed and dangerous. Investigators did not provide a hometown.

"We do not have any warrants for his arrest right now," Chief Deputy Steve Martin said. "It is unfolding as we speak."

The shootings at vehicles and buildings started in May, although most have been since October. The most recent was on Feb. 14.

Martin would not say what evidence led investigators to McCoy. He said the shootings task force don't know where McCoy is.

"I don't know if he's still local," he said. "We don't have any reason to believe he's not."

In the last shooting and two the previous weeks, witnesses described seeing someone aiming at them while standing next to a car. Both the description and car are similar to what the sheriff's office released Monday: a 5-foot-8-inch, 185-pound white male with brown hair and green eyes.

McCoy drives a four-door, dark green 1999 Geo Metro with a black hood, the sheriff's office said. The Ohio license tag is CGV7387.

So this is what happens when the "Something about Mary" pizza guy goes bad.

So how does this work? With no warrant, what can the police do? Ask him to come in for questioning voluntarilly?

Maybe it's a ploy and they do have an arrest warrant and they want him to think they are only going to question him. But I noticed in all the reports I've read the police do not use the ol' "we just want him for questioning" line. They stress the "armed and dangerous" part.

editted to add: this will show how background checks really work to prevent crime and apprehend criminals

For the record, you guys are all SICK...although that's why I like this forum)!

I do find it strange, though, that this "suspect's" name, description and plate number are being given to the media, but no arrest warrant has been issued.

OH law enforcement has really shot themselves in the foot during this entire investigation. No public confidence due to the delayed information in these shootings.

Regards,

Jamie

Happily that doesn't look anything like me. Nor does any car I might drive look like the one they're hoping to find. Guess it's safe to drive thru Columbus going to Circleville for the shoot this weekend. At least safe from being mistaken for the gunman. Be nice if I could collect the 60K for helping catch the guy.

"Happily that doesn't look anything like me."

LOL - I think all of the known firearm enthusiast in this area are breathing a collective sigh of relief.

an article this morning also said they had issuesd a warrant late monday night.

Also, a radio sound bite this morning (Tuesday) from his next door neighbor indicated that he was no longer in the green GEO METRO, but had left his house yesterday in a different (unnamed) vehicle.

Hey, I'm just impressed that they got such a detailed description of someone aiming at them as they drove by on an INTERSTATE HIGHWAY at something like 65-70mph! Especially the eye color!

Sounds more like someone turned in someone they knew.

Let's just hope that it's a better description than the one in Maryland over a year ago.

gave police a 9 mm Beretta handgun, and on Monday it was ballistically matched to some of the bullet fragments recovered in the shootings
Uh-oh, better ban those 9mm sniper handguns that can hit a flea at 500 yards . . .

Looks like another example of the media running ahead of their facts . . .

Apparently this Charles McCoy bought another gun within the past few days. The local press is going nuts over that now. " How can a mentally ill person purchase a gun?" "Let's find out what Mike Dewine, the Americans for Gun Safety, and some guy that used to work for Clinton, think about that." Grrrrrr.

I think the Alameda Co. Sheriff & CHP caught our own highway "sniper" (bushwhacker) here in California.
