Coming out of the closet

My guess is there are more people who hunt who actually care about animals and revere them, than those people who think meat comes in a wrapper. My general experience is people who have not grown or hunted their own food are often irreverent about food, and/or have issues disorders about food and eating.

To the OP, I shot a bird off a bird feeder when I was probably 8ish years old just to see if I could. I still to this day have never felt as terrible about anything. I still feel bad about it and it was 40 years ago.

Only animal I feel bad about killing is a coon that was getting to our neighbors apple's. Me and his grandsons where playing. And he said some choice words looked up and the thing was walking towards his house. So we grabbed our bb guns and hunted the thing down. 10 shoots & half a mile. We ended up having to finish it off with rocks and sticks.
Thinking back when we had it cornered should have went and grabbed my 410. But we had bb guns with us.

Only animals that get me all choked up is puttin' down a pet. After that, only rule is: You kill it, then you eat it. I live trap lotta vermin, just road-trip em. Exceptions for rats n mice of course.

Kinda funny how many have said they shot a bird in their youth, just to see if they could, then felt horrible.
That’s exactly what I did!

my dad gave me the task of thinning the chipmunk herds with my new to me Marlin 780, as he was building our house when I was 10. I was doing pretty good and didn’t feel too too bad about the pests.
But that bird changed me.

I quit sniping the chipmunks for a long time.
But I started again after having to tear the HVAC out of a couple cars because of their nests! Little b@$t@rds!
I put the fear of man back into them again for sure.
But I still felt bad. So, I hardened the cars (and house) so they can’t get in, and now we have peace again.
Mouse in the garage? Dead. Flies and moths? Good sport with the bug-a-salt. Spiders? I take them outside.
Besides the vermin and pests, and the one wounded deer; I figure if I kill it, I should eat it. Just a waste otherwise, and not very good stewardship.

Nobody liked to hunt more than me. I hunted anything that walked or flew.
Then one day something came over me and I lost all interest in hunting.
I kill bugs and such, but that's it. I have killed mice in the house as they were
doing a lot of damage to things, but I never use poison on them. I had a neighbor
that poisoned a dog we had, and after seeing what he went thru, I decided that
nothing deserves to die like that. O, there are a few people I wouldn't mind
taking a crack at.

I used to be an avid hunter but now I only shoot targets. I still eat meat, but not as much as I used to. The other day I made vegan chili with Impossible burger instead of beef. It was damn good!

I don’t feel bad about killing animals. It’s a decision that I’ve typically thought about and made ahead of time, I don’t regret those kinds of decisions.

There was a time where I had to go after a big muscovy duck that decided to try and nest in my backyard (i live in a subdivision with retention ponds). It got downright belligerent with my attempts to shoo it away and make it not want to be there.

long story short, I injured it pretty badly and i wasnt able to end its suffering the way it deserved. I felt really bad about that part.

For the most part if I'm not going to eat it, I don't kill it.
But there are exceptions.
I will kill any coyote or bobcat I see. It doesn't matter what I'm hunting, if I see one of those, it turns into a coyote or bobcat hunt.
They are absolute hell on quail and turkey populations.

I have long been a strictly paper puncher/Bullseye shooter. Never hunted-well, I did hunt for Uncle Sam, so to speak. Some IPSC years ago. In recent years firing 22RF almost exclusively, and if this ammo shortage keeps up I will be firing my air pistol more.

Wild game generally tastes like crap. We raise beef And pork to eat. Raise some fish too, but Also fish for meat. Hunt to get rid of pests. Hunting money and hunters feeding the deer causes me serious issues. They ate my whole 1 acre bean patch (yes an entire acre half pintos and half blackeyes) . I picked 2 meals worth. Coyotes and coons are picking my watermelons before they mature. (I am trapping but they just keep coming) Wild hogs tried to mow my sweet corn. We never see deer besides at night. I’m trying to work with parks and wildlife to get a permit to mow them down at night when they come ruin my crops. I’d like to just get some youngsters to come shoot all the deer, but I don’t ever see them during daylight so that’s probably a bust.

They got mine this year as well, so I understand. An entire acre of Taylor's horticulture beans, gone overnight. Ate my sunflowers out of my dove plots too. There will be a reckoning in a few weeks when muzzleloader season starts. The Hawken is sighted in, and the first week of November is rifle season so the ones it doesn't get the .270 will. I will eat some, but will likely try to donate most of them to Hunters Feeding the Hungry. If the bloody things have to die, at least they'll go for a good cause.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming...
