I am shopping for one and looking for suggestions. If I could find one, I'd buy a Dan Wesson Guardian. That's about the top of my price range. This would be for carry and range work. The LGS has a Kimber KHX Pro that I am giving some consideration.

Springfield Ronin EMP

The EMP is designed around the 9mm cartridge. They are a little bit "different" in feel than a traditional 1911. Unfortunately, they have a few proprietary parts to accommodate this.

They really fit my hand well.
I handled an EMP and didn't really like that "different" feel. Trying to stay with the traditional 1911 feel.

None of them. All of them.

I was looking at buying an officer or commander sized gun in 9mm for Christmas. I never found one I really liked. There’s a whole bunch that are close, but none that check all the boxes. A 1911 build is right up my alley but I don’t have the time. There’s a thread here running about a modern iteration of a detonics combat master and that’s awfully close to what I would like. There’s one HUGE difference though, I can’t deal with a stinkin rail on a metal framed pistol.

The biggest 2 boxes to check for me are the sights and the trigger. Tinker's Detonics build had me thinking that a 3rd generation S&W might work but my preference for 1911 ergos would probably get in the way.

I have an RIA Compact FDE and I have been super impressed with it. Great sights, good trigger, good accuracy and it will feed anything from dodgy reloads to hollow points, and even a weird 200 grs truncated cone bullet. It’s all steel, so there is likely lighter but this is a great little 1911.

NEVER MIND - not 9mm. Sorry.

The DW Guardian is an excellent choice and probably top of the pile until you get to Nighthawk, Wilson Combat, Alchemy Custom, Les Baer, etc.

My personal choice would be the CCO-size Dan Wesson PMC9, which is long out of production but was a steel officer frame with a commander slide.

Slightly more available are the still-discontinued Vigil and Valkyrie, which were available in 9mm in both Commander and CCO variants (I carry a Government Vigil in 9mm). And the ECO, which was an Officer-size in 9mm. Sadly, all discontinued.

I've got two of them. A Tisas Tank Commander, standard steel frame commander in 9mm, with two 9 round mags. Improved sights over a standard GI type sights (shown on top 1911A1 Service 45 above). Outstanding shooter and looks good to boot. Bottom left.

Bottom right is a Tisas "Sting-Ray, an aluminum frame, commander size 9mm, with the bob-tail frame, two 10 round mags, ambi safety, extended beavertail, three dot sights, skeleton trigger and hammer, lowered and flared ejection port, beveled mag well, two-tone color. The triggers on both are in the 4.5 pound range out of the box. They can be found for 400-500 more or less. Which one I like best depends on which one I'm holding.

Since I'm a creature of habit I would go with the original: the Colt Commander. Mine is a convertible in that it's a .38 Super but can also shoot 9mm., with a complete 9mm. barrel assembly and 9mm. magazines.

There doesn't appear to be any Commanders currently available new so your best bet would be to check online and at local gun shows to see if anything used turns up.

My next choice would be looking for a used Dan Wesson 9mm.

Let us know if you do find something.

Interesting thread. I have a Colt Gold Cup and a Colt Combat Commander and am contemplating another Commander sized 45 1911. The Ruger looks most like what I want, but I've got a bunch of older and modern Rugers.

I'm thinking something more exotic. Wilson combat, maybe?

But stainless slide/alloy frame don't seem to be as popular as I thought they'd be. And other than the Ruger 1911, I don't see any/many ambi safety setups.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but ......... recommendations? I've had Swenson safetys installed on a couple of my 1911s, including my current Commander. It's fine, but I'd like to avoid that additional step in the future.
