I'm aware of the popular rifles and calibers on this side of the pond, but I have little idea of what is popular and common in Europe.

They like the 243 Win. And the 308 Win.

7X64 Brenneke and 6.5X55 Swede are good'uns. And 9.3X62 is a popular choice for the non-recoil sensitive Euro-Zoner.

The 7.62X63 has also caught on there, or so I hear.

7.92x57mm IS aka 8mm Mauser. 2 World Wars coming out of Mausers and MG-42s with a 198 gr bullet loaded to 30-06 specs, dangerous!

The 8x57 and quite surprisingly 9,3x62 are quite popular. Matter of fact Savage Arms sent
bunch of bolt carabines in 8x57JS and 9,3x62 to Germany not that long ago. Almost bought blaze orange camo-stocked one myself.

Yes, 7x64 is popular as is 9.3x62.
(I own both).

.270 is pretty popular
.30-06 is apparently the most popular hunting round in Germany.

Some of the military calibres are not allowed for hunting in some countries. (Certainly France and I think Italy too)
So, not as much .308 and .223 in some parts though pretty popular in others. (Hence why European manufacturers still go in for .222 Remmy)

8x57 & 7x57 are there as well.

I lived in Germany in the 90s while in the Army and the guys I talked to said that the milsurp rifles in 6.5x55 .303 and the like are very popular sporterized.

7.62x51R AKA 30-30 is popular all over the world. Probably works well in European forested areas as a carbine.

.22 Hornet is remarkably popular, known there as the 5.6x36R.

In fact, rimmed cartridges are remarkably popular, especially in Central Europe where drillings, bergstutz (over under rifle shotgun combos) and single shot break actions are quite popular. The 7.62x51R remains a very popular round as well. We know it as the 30-30. The 7.62x51 is our rather more potent .308. 6.5x55 is still quite popular especially in Scandinavia. The Swiss are fond of some fairly bizarre 10mm stuff shot from incredibly ornate Scheutzen type rifles.

Among the heavy hitters, there are numerous cartridges built off the 7x57 cartridge, everything up through the 9.3x57, although the 9.3x74R (based off the Brenekke family of cartridges) is the more popular of that Caliber in Central Europe. The 303 is not particularly popular in the UK and owning a rifle is quite a hassle. 375 H&H remains popular in the UK and I understand that the 7mm Mag has made great inroads of late with the deer stalkers in Scotland. But again, the .22 Hornet and the 22LR remain very relevant in the UK.

.303 isn't popular in Britain because the popular 173gr (I think 173 anyway) bullet was not pushed at the required 2450ft/sec to be "deer legal" in Scotland. Hence sporterised .303s fell out of favour in the UK as you couldn't use them where a lot of the deer are.

Also, after a while the manufacturers really stopped chambering it and went over to rimless rounds.

I'd also be interested to know how many of the British Army Enfields went abroad to the various commonwealth armies (am thinking mainly India) when the 7.62 Nato came in rather than being sporterised...

I saw more 7.62x54R then anything but given that I was in the then recently collapsed Soviet Union that should not surprise anyone.
From what I know of the rest of Europe the 6.5, 7mm, and 8mm Mauser cartridges are still very popular and 270 Win/30-06/243 have been gaining a solid foothold for some years now.
It is weird to think about the cartridges I have not seen overseas, never saw a 45ACP, 30-30, 25-06 or 7mm-08 in all the years I was overseas.

In Russia,
They have used the Mosin Nagant in similar fashion to our love of the M1 Garand and 30/06. It shoots the 7.62x54mmR round and while used for hunting, is considered by some to be "too much" for polar bears!

Mauser 6,5x55 and 9,3x62

I use 6,5x55 for long range varmint and small to mid size game. For big game like Moose, Bear and Wild boar I use the 9,3x62 it pack´s a punch!!
