Hi All,

I have a Colt Government 1911 (5”) that needed a new holster, as my current Bianchi #2 was getting pretty worn. I am left handed.

I wanted an OWB holster for range use, so I didn’t care about being able to conceal it. I read good things about Comp-Tac’s IWB holsters, so I ordered the Minotaur Gladiator holster, expecting the quality to be the same.

My main needs were comfort and protecting my prize Colt when holstered.

Below are some pictures with comments added. Note that I am a first time Comp-Tac customer.

I was really disappointed when I saw the leather backing didn’t completely cover the Kydex shell. It may be because these holsters are meant for much smaller guns (shorter barrell lengths)??

The back of the holster is beautiful in my opinion (smooth leather).

The edge of the Kydex shell is very thin (good), but feels like a butter knife edge when it digs into your leg . I sat a few times to test the comfort, one time sitting next to a pillow which dislodged the gun from its holster. This may not be a typical scenario though, just telling what happened to me.

The alignment issue you see here may not be typical of their quality, so I am going to see if it can be corrected.

In summary:

Pros:

a. Leather was well stitched and looked really good
b. Snaps were tight fitting
c. Belt loops were sized perfectly for my 1.5 inch Wilderness belt
d. Kydex shell molding was well made
e. Customer service is friendly.

Cons:

a. Kydex shell extended past leather backing (unacceptable in my opinion)
b. Bad alignment between Kydex shell and leather backing (unacceptable in my opinion)

The two cons listed above rendered this holster a non-optimal choice for my full size Colt. I will give Comp-Tac the chance to fix these issues, and report back with the results, and if I had to incur any additional costs. Often, with additional customer shipping costs, restocking fees, etc, it can be difficult to come away with much of your original investment left.

Thanks for the review. I have an M-TAC for my Sig P226 and the leather goes all the way down. Odd it doesn't on this model holster. I can see how the bottom kydex edge would be uncomfortable!

I have an M-Tac for a compact Glock that I really like. I have been thinking about buying a Gladiator for a S&W 40C, but just haven't got around to it. They are a good company and should take care of you. Thanks for the review.

Kudos to Comp-Tac customer service

Hi All,

I recently purchased a Comp-Tac Gladiator holster for my full size 1911. It was going to be used for a range gun only. Here are some pictures:

I initially thought it wasn't going to work for me, but after speaking with their customer service a couple times, I have decided to keep it.

Comp-Tac doesn't make the leather, it gets it from Minotaur Holsters, and the leather comes in only one size for the Gladiator, so short barrelled guns have full coverage of the muzzle, longer barrelled ones (like my 5") do not.

I think the leather by itself is beautiful, and the Kydex half body is very well made. I think my problems were mostly my expectations. This is not a $400 custom Tucker or Milt Sparks rig. Once I realized that, I looked at the Gladiator differently (it is $80).

Hopefully my initial comments about the holster did not offend anybody.

Thanks for the review.... Can you swap out the bodies on the Gladiator? Is the ride really low on these holsters?

Can't interchange bodies on the Gladiator

Comp-tac's website says you can interchange bodies on their MTAC and Neutral Cant holsters, but you cannot interchange bodies on the Gladiator. I feel like the holster rides about perfect for range use. I have seen holsters that ride much higher and some only a little lower.

Tucker Silent Thunder

Hi .45Heater,

I just ordered the Silent Thunder (OWB version) from Tucker Gunleather. It is leather lined Kydex, and gets amazing reviews from the community. I'll report back when I have had a chance to use it.

Other than Tucker, BladeTech makes a pure Kydex rig, Comp-Tac makes one also, but I don't have any first hand experience with these.
