I have a Colt Government 1911 (5”) that needed a new holster, as my current Bianchi #2 was getting pretty worn. I am left handed.
I wanted an OWB holster for range use, so I didn’t care about being able to conceal it. I read good things about Comp-Tac’s IWB holsters, so I ordered the Minotaur Gladiator holster, expecting the quality to be the same.
My main needs were comfort and protecting my prize Colt when holstered.
Below are some pictures with comments added. Note that I am a first time Comp-Tac customer.
I was really disappointed when I saw the leather backing didn’t completely cover the Kydex shell. It may be because these holsters are meant for much smaller guns (shorter barrell lengths)??
The back of the holster is beautiful in my opinion (smooth leather).
The edge of the Kydex shell is very thin (good), but feels like a butter knife edge when it digs into your leg . I sat a few times to test the comfort, one time sitting next to a pillow which dislodged the gun from its holster. This may not be a typical scenario though, just telling what happened to me.
The alignment issue you see here may not be typical of their quality, so I am going to see if it can be corrected.
In summary:
Pros:
a. Leather was well stitched and looked really good
b. Snaps were tight fitting
c. Belt loops were sized perfectly for my 1.5 inch Wilderness belt
d. Kydex shell molding was well made
e. Customer service is friendly.
Cons:
a. Kydex shell extended past leather backing (unacceptable in my opinion)
b. Bad alignment between Kydex shell and leather backing (unacceptable in my opinion)
The two cons listed above rendered this holster a non-optimal choice for my full size Colt. I will give Comp-Tac the chance to fix these issues, and report back with the results, and if I had to incur any additional costs. Often, with additional customer shipping costs, restocking fees, etc, it can be difficult to come away with much of your original investment left.
