Unless I missed it did anyone mention insurance? I am a definite no! But would not your home owners insurance cover the replacement cost? Maybe a stupid suggestion. I could maybe see it for a really, really important family heirloom?

A lot of opponents to that here. Seems like a lot of gunfolk have their security solutions handled. Safes, locks, watchful eyes. It seems that if others were as watchful as some of ours, there would be less need for chips elsewhere. Self-sufficiency has a positive ripple effect.

only in special cases, like if it was an antique, heirloom, or incredibly valuable would I even think about attaching a "theft-recovery" device to my firearms.

I knew what the other guys were going to say before looking at the posts. That kind of thing just goes against our beliefs. The last thing we need is more government involved in our business.

Here's my thought. I would NOT put chips in all my guns. But if I had some super uber-tacticool hunting rifle that I spent a pretty penny on I might consider it. Here are my rules.

1. Its an option never a requirment
2. Not in my carry gun
3. Doesnt mess with function AT ALL
4. I would prefer it easily removable, say put the chip in a scope ring. Its on the gun when I want it and not when I dont.

You might try to ask No Such Agency about those tracing devices, but I doubt that you would hear that they exist.

Any electronic device can easily be disabled, so the price is not worth it.

A chip similar to the dog chip for the same purpose would be okay, though probably best buried irretrievably in some vital portion of the gun. In the case of the dog it ensures a lost and found pup gets back to the owner--chip is serial number type function.

No. That does seem like a bad idea. Although I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to a RFID tag if only I had the number.

I dont even own any cards with RFID tags in them, personally i dont want anything with a trackable chip in it.

so of course my vote goes to no way in ******* HE!! i'd have a gun with a chip in it

HELL NO!.

And if any MFR got the idea in their heads to start it, I would never buy their stuff.

Not the kind of cutting edge technology I would like to associate with my firearms. When I think of chips......I think of chronographs, electronic scales, etc. By the way isn't that what serial numbers are for?

I have no problem with a computer chip in firearms, as long as I have full and unfettered access to do with the code exactly as I wish. Adding technology to guns isn't the issue, the issue is whether it violates our rights. Microprocessors don't intrinsically violate our rights and could, in theory, add some really cool features to the gun. That said, I don't want a GPS receiver in it. Firstly, it might just be useless unless you have an antenna poking out of the slide, because one shot and you may very well lose your fix, and secondly, privacy issues.

But add a microprocesor for me to play with, and you've got yourself a sale.

You might as well ask is we'd get a gun that would only work for us. The technology doesn't exist to do what you're talking about and probably won't for a very long time so what's the point of even discussing whether we'd get the mythical tech?

The idea isn't technically feasible but if it were a sci-fi world sure I think I would although I imagine the police going out to get my gun back for me would be low on the list of things to do for the day.
