I have had a CCW for many years, and through trial and error, as far a full sized guns go, I have most often carried a Lightweight Commander or simular 1911 in a Summer Speical inside the pants holster, and sometimes in a Miami Vice shoulder Holster.

But sometimes, I like to carry a big revolver, and I have sometimes carried a Peacemaker singleaction, in a strong side holster, sometimes in a crossdraw configuration.

But I find the bigger revolvers pretty hard to carry concealed, in any kind of belt holster, not to mention dragging my britches down, even a 4 inch model 19. But there are times, when I would prefer to carry a 4 inch model 29, which I have shot a fair amount over the years, but not carried much.

I am thinking about a Lawman Dirty Harry Shoulder holster. Does anyone here use one? Other suggestions? Sometimes I would like to carry a Mountain gun with 44 specials, but now I have a regular 29-2, also and I like it too.

Shoulder holster is what I use. I have carried N frames and SA&DA Rugers and 1911's in the past. Now that I'm old and slow I carry a J frame in my pocket.

I carry a 4" N frame in 45 ACP all day long. Over the years I have used a couple of rigs. Mostly in a Bianchi 5BH. When I wanted a more secure feel, I used a Pancake holster with the holster between my belt and trousers.

I have tried the shoulder rigs but found them not to my liking.

Safariland also used to make a rig similar to the 5BH.

I carry a 4" N frame pretty regularly. No reason at all to go with a shoulder rig, with all of their disadvantages.

The most, or second-most important thing to do is get a GOOD gun belt. If your pants are falling down, ditch the Walmart dress belt and get a Beltman belt or the Wilderness Tactical Instructor belt (what I use) or something similar that can stand up to a real gun.

For IWB, I use the Ultrux Miurage kydex holster from Hoffners: http://www.hoffners.com/holster.htm

I'm carrying a 4" 629 and multiple speed-loaders in this pic:

And here it is uncovered:

Since those pics were taken I've moved the rear belt loop back about 1.5" and I like it even more now.

Another option is the Carry A Big One line: http://caboholster.com/

Great bang for the buck.

One critical feature of those holsters pictured above is that the big ol' cylinder is held *above* the belt, which makes a huge difference in tucking it in.

I would think the opposite. I thought that having the cylinder above would help disguise the large cylinder which is what I find my only complaint with trying to conceal a 6 shot revolver.

I think Daizee meant "critical" as in "important." Not that he's critical of (negatively disposed toward) the idea.

The cylinder riding above the belt is much more comfortable and much more favorable for concealment.

The exception is certain holsters for deeper concealment of J-frames & such that drop all but the stocks below the belt, but that's a different animal.

You can easily make your own holsters and experiment until you find one that you really like. That's how I started years ago, and all my holsters are now my own design and making.

You can buy shoulders, thread and other material from www.tandyleatherfactory.com. One set of shoulders will make a dozen or more holsters. In fact, from the last set of shoulders I bought, I made holsters for:

A Colt New Service (7 1/2" barrel)
A Ruger Blackhawk (7 1/2" barrel)
Another Ruger Blackhawk (5 1/2" barrel)
A Colt Detective Special.
Five concealment holsters for the M1911
A Colt Woodsman

And I still have enough left for at least two more holsters.

Thanks, for the links, I will take a look. I know all about having a good belt, etc. However, it's still a challange for me, sometimes. Unfotunately my body is shaped like a pear, with not much in the way of hips, etc. to keep even a wide sturdy belt, with a gun from crawling down on me. This is probably why I have usually resorted to the Lightweight commander, or smaller gun a lot. However, my Miami Vice shoulder holster carries a full sized 1911 pretty confortably, for me. So, I have considered a vertical shoulder rig for some of my larger revolvers.
