I was working as a LEO, and had a reserve officer riding with me. We were at the local ER dealing with an individual that had tried to slash his wrists the night before, but had fled before night-shift guys got there. Now, he was at the ER seeking treatment. We took him into custody under Florida's Baker Act, which allows cops to remand a person who is a danger to himself or others to a psychiatric facility.
He was cuffed, but needed to hit the head, so my partner uncuffed him so one of us wouldn't have to hold "it". Once he was done whizzing, my partner went to re-cuff him, and the guy broke free and took off running down a long quiet hallway, making his escape through a door at the other end. Both of us were in pursuit, with the reserve slightly in front of me. As he ran, I suddenly saw something black sliding and skipping down the hall, following him, and bouncing off the walls. It was his BUG, a heavy and clunky RG .38 revolver, that had come loose from his ankle rig. Though it took me a few seconds to catch it, I managed to scoop it up as I ran and shoved it into my back pocket.
During the subsequent search of the woods across from the hospital, the reserve called me on the radio to see if I'd recovered his piece.
We did end up finding the guy again hiding in the woods..
