What would you load in your 7.62x39 brass for whacking hogs?

These are a selection of 123gr .310 bullets available through Midway:

Barnes TSX?
Hornady SP?
Hornady SST?
Speer Hot-Cor?

Thanks.

I use a 308 with reduced loads, not much above 30-30 levels, and I have had great success on pigs of all sizes with both the Hornady bullets you list plus the Hotcor.

Unless the pigs are gigantic in which case I recommend something with more power, I cant see why the expense of TSX bullets would be justified.

None of the above.

I'd load either sierra or hornady 170grain flat points or just use the 154g soft point tula ammo

I've not owned a x39 yet that wouldn't shoot .308" bullets just as accurately as .310"

I've killed a passel of hogs with a 7.62x39 AR with a 16" barrel. Hornady 123gr's blow up too fast (but work well on deer) but the Sierra 125gr SP ProHunter will give a complete side-to-side pass through shot on large hogs (I've used it at contact distance on a 500lb boar) without blowing apart. I called Sierra about this years ago, and they stated that the 125gr .311 bullet was designed for the 7.7Japanese/303R British rounds and therefore was stouter than other bullets in its bore/weight class.

I can see no reason to move up to the 150gr or 174gr RN (even thought I've worked up loads for them) when the Sierra 125gr does the trick.

I've taken a couple smaller feral/wild pig with winny white box 123gr sp.
one slug was pass-thru neck shot drt. the other was full on frontal I dug the slug out the core came loose from the jacket, jacket was in the gut core was stuck in pelvic bone. it ran about 50' then dropped kicking. these were at about 100' out of a ground blind.
really large ones maybe a 150gr would do better and I've experimented w/good results on paper with the Speer 150gr sp - no game taken w/it yet however but feel confident that for larger animals and/or tougher shots it will do fine

Just a friendly reminder,... I was not asking about factory ammo because I intend to handload.

Can anyone recommend one of the four .310 bullets for handloading 7.62x39 brass?

That's what I thought that I did; dis-recommended one and recommended another....

rbernie, I sincerely appreciate your recommendations; I appreciate your thoughts on the Hornady bullets. The issue here is I sent a letter to Savage regarding handloading and bullet caliber. After the legal disclaimer and warranty voiding language, they recommended .310 bullets. So, I don't want you to take offense, but my initial question was never really answered.

I think you need to understand that in terms of bullet diameter .001" and even .002" + or - is for all practical purposes NOTHING. That individual rifle bores and for darn sure individual lots of bullets can vary by most of that much.

This thread I started has a test that may shed some light on the matter

RW, I appreciate your comments. Why is this so complicated? You need to understand that regardless of your own observations, I would like to follow Savage's recommendations. I spent good money on this rifle, so I do not plan to load either .308 or .311 bullets.
