I am sure this has been asked before, but I am curious about what the Cops on the High Road carry. I carry a G21 with a Kel-Tec P11 as a BUG. I had to buy both with my own money as my department does not issue duty weapons. The only restriction they have in that no gun we carry can be smaller than a .380 caliber. I also have a department issue Remington 870 that stays in my patrol car. We share cars here, no take home policy, so I am not sure I would trust the 870 as I have never been able to take it home to check it out. I would have my AR in my car but they do not allow patrol rifles at this time.

So, my question is this, what do you carry on duty? Is it department issue or did you buy it yourself? Also, does your department issue but allow you to use something else? I have a friend that works in another city that issues a G22 or a G17. But he is allowed to carry his own Sig P226. He says that they have a list of approved guns that they can carry. He also said that they cannot carry any single action only guns(1911 type pistols). Is this common in police departments? I am not sure if we can carry a 1911 as we have no pistol list, just a caliber list. I know that when I went to the academy they would not allow single action only pistols on the range. Do the rule makers really think that COP'S cant function a single action weapon? Makes me want to get one just to piss them off:neener:

Not a cop here, but here's some of the local departments in my area and their policies.

Fort Collins PD: almost anything in 9mm and up (most if not all officers have AR's)
CSU pd: same
Larimer County sheriff: same (also, every officer is issued an AR and a 12 gauge)

Greeley PD: G21 for everyone, Officers can carry a personal AR once they take dept training for a rifle.

The-Fly, that is pretty much what I thought department policies were everywhere. I just wish I could carry my own AR. Even our ESU team only carries pistols and 870's. So much for not being outgunned.

I am issued a Glock 19 and a Remington 870. I also carry a S&W Model 49 Bodyguard as my back-up and a Glock 26 as my car gun. I spend so much time sitting in my car, doing reports in my car I realized several years ago that I needed a gun to access quickly - faster than the one in my holster.

I carry the issued Glock 17, as well as the issued Rem 870 in the car. As soon as I take the qualification course I'll also be able to carry an AR-15 style rifle.

We carry Sig p220 45 acp, department issue, one officer carries an S&W 4566 STW and for trunk gun I carry a M 14 sometimes and an FN FAL L1A1 other times. Just what I feel like at the time. Back-up is a Kel-Tec p11.

Not a cop here, but I know the Syracuse PD carries S&W 4506 and every other agency in the area that I have eyeballed has a Glock of some form.

Been a few years since I was a cop. But, when I was, it was this.

Still a good choice for those who can shoot.

This was the backup - 'cept we weren't supposed to carry any backup.

I'd prefer to carry a Glock 17 or Glock 22 if I were still policing.
My old department is on Glock 17's now.

I work for two depts, I am a deputy with the county Sheriff's Office and the shellfish warden for a small coastal town. Because I work part-time for the S.O. and am the only LEO working for the town I've had to purchase my own weapons and gear. The S.O. only issues guns and gear to full-timers but the town reimburses me for any uniforms, equipment, and ammo I need, just not guns.

The full time deputies have the choice of being issued a Glock 21 and Mini-14 or purchasing their own if they want something different. There are also a few dept issued 870's around too. For duty use just about anything goes as long as it is of adequate caliber and you can qualify with it. We have people carrying Glocks, Rugers, S&W, Springfields, etc., mostly .45's but a few .40's and 9's. One old guy still carries a .357mag revolver. Not many buy their own long guns but those that do have AR-15's. We also have one guy that is attached to Maine DEA that has a HK UMP .45ACP submachine gun that the state provides him. It's a kick in the pants to shoot!:D

Personally, I carry a HK USPc 357sig as a duty weapon and a Kel-tec P3at as a back up. My patrol rifle is a Bushmaster C15-M4 and I also have a Mossberg 590A1. Off-duty I carry either the HK, a Kel-tec PF-9, or the .380 depending on clothing, weather, etc.

I also have a department issue Remington 870 that stays in my patrol car. We share cars here, no take home policy, so I am not sure I would trust the 870 as I have never been able to take it home to check it out.
Can you ask your sgt or supervisor if you could take the shotgun to the range on a day when the car isn't being used? I'd use the argument that you want to get a feel for where it shoots, as every shotgun patterns slightly differently. Or maybe you can try a different one in the armory with some of your fellow officers and then get it swapped into the car once you get comfortable.

Not a LEO, but the local police all carry Glock 22s, Sheriff's Dept seems to have more discretion - I saw a deputy at my bank the other day carrying a Gunsite 1911.

Fire Department Arson Investigator

Original issue in 1997 Colt 1991A1 9mm
Colts could not hold up to our line of work. Replaced by Sigs or H&k in 2000.

2002 Fire Chief approved personally owned Glocks for use. RRA AR15 also approved for use.

I currently carry the G17 on regular 48 hour shifts. Glock has shown to be very resistive to corrosion from hours of being in hot wet and sweaty conditions.

Follow up Investigations I carry a 1911. I only have a back up if I'm on a Task Force call in the East St Louis area.

Not an LEO but in my town they carry Sigs in .40, and are allowed a a dept. issue AR-15 if they qualify, BUGs have to be bought on their own and approved and qualified with to be carried. A while beack the dept had some truly beautiful Remington semi-auto shotguns, they were donated by a resident who was a bigshot at Remington, checkered wood stock and everything, those were phased out.

I work plainclothes and carried the Glock 27 for years and just recently went back to the 22 after becoming a firearms instructor. I carry my own 32 Kel-tec w/Corbon's in my pocket along with a CRKT M16 blade in the other. If things are bad I grab a Mini-14, AR15 or an Rem. 870 if responding to a bank, mental or barricade with loads accordingly(bean bag, slug or TAP).

duty weapons

Agency issued Sig 226R-DAK in .40 S&W caliber. The Sig 229R and 239 are authorized options. (The 239 works particularly good for shooters with small hands or for concealment purposes). Duty load is currently the Winchester Ranger 165 grn. SXT #RA40TA.

Officers have a choice on holsters. The baffled carry products made by Uncle Mike's. The more knowlegable mostly carry some variety of the Safariland SLS holster.

Most agencies around here issue or authorize Glocks.

We have Bushmaster XM15ES2 carbines in the squad cars. Issue round is the Hornady TAP round (60 grain)

(We've had troubles with the gas keys shooting loose on the Bushmasters. And I suspect the front sight towers are the wrong height for a carbine -- we really have to crank the elevation on the front sight up to zero the guns)[I wanted Colt AR-15A3s but the Bushmasters were cheaper. You get what you pay for]

Most agencies in my area use the AR platform from Colt or Bushmaster or DPMS for rifles in the squad cars. (Colt is probably the single most common)

A few agencies have Remington M870 shotguns, either in addition to the rifles or used as dedicated lauchers for less-than-lethal beanbag rounds.

Our department issues Sig P226 in .40 S&W. We have Remington 870's in our car as well. Our tac team guys carry M4's in their vehicles, and regular patrol officers have the opporunity to be certified and carry them as well. We are in the process of getting HK UMP's in .40 for trunk guns.

Our department however has a policy against BUG guns. Neighboring towns do carry them and Ive seen someone with a compact 1911 on their ankle. Nice.

My rank within the department does not allow me to carry off duty yet, but I have a valid florida non-res CHL. When I carry its a Taurus m85 ultralight in .38 special. I carry +P rated Glaser Safety Slugs. Ive also been known to carry my Walther ppk in .32 as well.

The Lone Haranguer

I have carried Colt, Springfield, and even a Brolin 1911 to work. They all required constant cleaning and lube to keep from rusting or pitting. On a busy day this may have to be done a few times.

If I'm that busy on 911 calls I do not have time to mess with it.

Glock 19, agency issued. No back-up pistol. In addition a remington 870, and an HK MP5, both issued.

I previsously carried all of the following at one time or another in my 28 year career (so far): Beretta 92SB, and then a Beretta 92FS when I could carry them, they are personally owned. In addition I have carried Glock 26 (back-up, issued), S&W 66 (issued), S&W 66 (4" barrel, personally owned), S&W 66 (2.5" barrel, personally owned), S&W 19 (issued) S&W 60 (back-up, issued), S&W 36 (back-up, issued), S&W 6906 (issued), S&W 9mm in a model I cannot recall - the predecessor to the 6906 (issued), Colt Border Patrol (issued), Remington 870 (personally owned), Remington 760 (I think that was the model but it was about 28 years ago, it was a pump in .308), Colt AR-15 (issued), Ruger Mini 14 (issued).

I think that is about it.

All the best,
Glenn B

Not a cop but here's what I've observed in the Oklahoma City area.

OKC Cops carry Glock 22's.

Highway Patrol - used to carry Sig P220's switched to something else.

County Sherrifs - never gotten close enough to be sure but it sure looks like what they're carry'n is H&K USP45's to me.

My duty pistol, worn when in uniform, is a SIG P229R DAK. All of our uniform duty pistols are chambered in .40 S&W, privately purchased, and chosen from a list that changes from time to time, either by addition or deletion. Only the P229 has been on the list since 1997, when the all-DA-.40 policy went into effect. If a pistol is deleted, those who own them can keep using them if they keep their quals up to date. Likewise, weapons "grandfathered" from before the 1997 rule policy change can remain, and some of the older officers still carry sixguns, 1911s, and other stuff chambered in .38/9mm up to and including .45ACP and Colt. I kept 1911 pistols grandfathered until 2002, then voluntarily set them them aside, and carried the Glock G22, until I got myself the first P229 DAK I could find in my area. I just purchased a spare P229, a decocker version. I use .357 snubbies and sixguns, all Rugers, as backups and on my own time. I have an 870P with a Vang-comp barrel, and am also certified to carry an AR15 patrol rifle, though I am not currently "qualed" with the one I own. I could no longer focus on the front sight of the short AR carbine, so I sold the one I was using to a fellow officer. I recently acquired an HBAR upper for the other AR in the safe, and may be able to qual as soon as next week. No urgent hurry; on night shift, things happen up close and fast, and the 870P should be adequate.
