Hi,

I've got a real nice old Marlin Golden 39A. It was manufactured in 1961. I've had it a real long time now. It's just a great rifle.

Anyway, it has been drilled and tapped for a scope and has the old "JM" side cock hammer.

For some reason I was thinking of putting the correct type of rear sight back on it but I don't know what is right for it.

Can someone tell me what type of rear sight it came out of the factory with in 1961 please? Here are a couple of pics.

I checked mine, I am not sure of the date of manufacture, but I know that my dad got it in the late 60's or early 70's, and it was used when he got it.

Mine has a fold down notch sight on the barrel, and a lyman peep sight mounted on the left side of the reciever, just ahead of the hammer.

They came d&t'd on the top and the side.

My '63 Mountie has a bent sheetmetal rear sight - one long piece with a separate sliding adjuster thingy.

My copy of the 1967 Shooter's Bible shows 3 39a's - a rifle, a Mountie and a Carbine. All three have the bent metal rear sight. It's easy to tell from a side view, the upright part is really thin and isn't completely upright, it leans back a little.

Yeah, they get it wrong sometimes but overall they do a great job.

I've been noticing, though, that they're selling a lot of new manufactured replicas of some of the old gun's parts and often they just don't quite look right.

Looking at their Marlin 39 listings I think a lot of what's listed is copies - especially the springs and screws and other small but essential bits.
