Well the Alaska compound continues to take shape. Among other things I have learned not to underestimate the difficulties of stump removal.

I don't think I'll get to it this year, but next summer I'd love to build myself a pistol/rimfire range of about 25 yards. There's no zoning and no covenants on the property, but I do have a neighbor two lots away and common law nuisance applies. What I'm wondering is how hard it would be to build a half-buried range, and whether anyone knows of landscaping/noise reductions plans on line for such a range. Or a book that discusses it.

It would only be for .22LR, .38 Special, 9x19 and the like. Nothing too powerful or noisy.

I've got five acres to play with, so space isn't a problem.

Cosmo,
I've thought about making a subterranean range, but gave it up when I realized the sunken part would be a natural water trap during rain/snow. You do anticipate rain/snow in Alaska, I assume? :D

As far as noise abatement goes, I plan to simply enclose the shooting point with timbers, and eventually an earth-filled wall of some sort. Good luck with the compound.

If you can find a source, you can use old tires as a buffering to reduce the noise of shooting. Set them sidewall to sidewall with the rim openings lined up to shoot through. About two feet in front of the muzzle and maybe 8'-10' deep toward the target. Sounds silly but seems to work.

Bear in mind that if you do anything that looks like a formal, properly-set-up firing range, you'll have to deal with the EPA and other creatures (lead pollution of the environment, etc. - also Federal law, rather than State law). This can be VERY expensive... Better do something informal, that doesn't look like a purpose-built range.

Also, if you build something enclosed or semi-enclosed, what are the chances of a local bruin deciding that this would be the perfect place to hibernate during the winter? :D

Thanks for the advice. I suppose it can't be underground since the water table is right there. I can get tires easily enough, though.

I'm way, way off the EPA's radar screen, but I do want to make it so I'll be able to re-harvest at least some of the lead and melt it down again. No sense letting it get into my own groundwater, either.

whats the terrain like? flat? sloped?
what does 5 acres equate to? iow, whats the square footage? how many yards wide by long?
