cotton web sling - can you use this on an AR15?

Learning how to use a M14 green cotton web sling with my AR15...bear with me please while I ask a couple of dumb questions...

Q1. the sling appears to be too long to use with my AR. I unclipped the hook from the rear swivel, and then put the back loop around my bicep and tightened it using the slider. Then I made the front loop as big as possible (slid the front loop's clasp to be adjacent to the back loop's slider). Even in this position "as tight as possible", the sling is maybe 6" to 12" too long to support the rifle. I am using a full size fixed stock and a 20" bbl.

I can't cut the sling to make it shorter since the free end (which feeds through the front loop's clasp) has a metal clip permanently crimped onto it which I'd have somehow re-mount after cutting the free end to be shorter.

Q2. the sling came with two rear sling hooks attached to the back loop. Obviously I hook one to the rear swing swivel, but what's the second one for? These hooks don't seem to have a way to be detached from the web material, so its not a spare. What is its purpose?

So far I can't make this dog hunt, except maybe to use the front loop as a hasty sling. Any help appreciated!

I run mine backwards. I threw the metal swivel clip away. The slider is at the front and the adjustment clip at the rear. To shoot the rifle using the sling, I open the clip, pull the end completely out and remove the sling from the rear swivel, then I make my loop and wrap it around my bicep. Let the extra hang out (you can make the sling as short as you need to). Adjust your length from arm to rifle with the slider.

It takes longer to setup and it's not the "correct way" to do it (I get people tell me it's backwards all the time), but it works and you don't need that jangling swivel clip.
