Sand Rat, it is a pointing out of the systematic failure of our Society on several levels. The Soldier or Marine 50 years ago is not the Soldier or Marine today. Pretty close, but not the same.
our enemies's 50 years ago are not the same as our enemies today. We don't fight against first world countries with established militaries anymore. I don't count the Iraqi military, pre-2003, as a first world military so don't even compare the Iraqi military to the German or Japanese military of WW2. Our military personnel today have to operate under a lot more scruntiny than personnel serving 50 years ago. A soldier, marine, airmen, or sailor who shoots an unarmed Iraqi or Afghan civilian gets front page news and a court martial hearing. A US soldier, sailor, marine, or airmen who shoots an unarmed Korean civilian back during the Korean War will never see his/her name in the papers at all. You are comparing apples to oranges.
