Hey guys,

If this won't work please tell me why.

What would be wrong with using two of these lined, flexible clamps to attach a flashlight barrel?

They come in different sizes and can be attached to each other with bolts and nuts (and probably loctite).

Could be used to attach non-1" flashlights too as they can be bent to fit if the exact size could not be found. Same goes for the barrel clamp.

Shape one to the barrel, shape one to the light, making a figure 8 shape then attach them to each other and tighten. I think it will work.

And no marring of the barrel or light as they are lined. And it would be a hell of a lot cheaper then the shotgun light mounts I have seen online.

What do you think? Will this work?

Why not just get one of these?

I'm not sure if the clamp you posted will work, but the one I posted was made for holding a flashlight. I'm assuming the gun in reference is going to be an HD gun. Why would you want to use something not designed for it to possibly save your life?

I have used the old .22 "see through" scopemounts from KMart (1" clamp over 3/4" clamp)
Code:
 ( )
 ---
( )
to mount a 3/4" Maglight to the magazine tube of a 12ga. (using clear nail polish inside the clamp for loctite).

I'm sure it would work. It might be a good idea to use 2 x sets as the soft metal would be easy to bend and any rough handling could cause the flashlight to be turned sideways. I'd also be concerned about sustained firing because the heated barrel may cause the lining to melt.

Don't let the naysayers get to you.

For several reason. Here's a pic of the shotgun:

1. Finding a way to mount a light on this has been tough. Note there is less than 1/2" of space on the mag tube.
All the mount/clamps I could find were well over 1/2" wide and I'm not going to pay $50-$60 to add a decent mag extension just so I can hang a light on the shotgun.
(I had to call manufacturers and sellers to find the clamp widths. No on seems to list this information in their descriptions. (What a pain in the butt that was!)

2. The barrel diameter on the shotgun and the flashlight are different. Maybe they can do it, but I don't see how any of the clamps I looked at could be used for firmly clamping anything of different diameters together.

3. A lot/most of the clamps I saw are for 1" diameter flashlights. This one is 0.88" in diameter.

4. I can make a "custom" clamp. The clamps I plan to use are made out of steel, carbon steel, stainless steel or aluminum. Take your pick. They are bendable, but they are by no means soft. You can buy them lined with vinyl or rubber. I think vinyl or rubber will make for a better grip than metal on metal. These clamps will not mar the barrel or the light.

5. Total cost with the necessary nuts and bolts will be less than $5.

6. I enjoy solving tricky problems.

That's a weird looking shotgun :)

I get your point and you can do whatever you want to get a flashlight on there. If you want some home depot special hanging off of your rig, by all means, do it. My HD shotgun does have a flashlight on it with a proper mount because I count on that gun to perform when its called upon. There is now way I would trust that clamp for anything other than its intended purpose.

Naysayers? What naysayers? Oh, you mean dear ol' dad? He's just being dad. No worries.

How about good ol duct tape???
Duct tape is usually the last recourse of a desperate man.

That's why it's my Plan B.

On the contrary, it has been my FIRST resort on making prototype plans....sometimes it just works so well...I just keep using it!:neener:

You asked for opinions and you got one, that's all. No need to be condescending. You asked if it would work and the answer is....yes, it most likely will. But so will electrical tape, zip ties and super glue.

Next time you post up a question on whether you should use a cheap peice of rubber/metal on your gun, be prepared for the answers. We're all on here to learn from eachother. I've tried stupid things like this in the past and learned from my experiences. I apologize if I want another fellow gun enthusiast to not make the same dumb mistakes I've made.

Looking at that setup, why don't you order an extra magazine end cap and braze the butt of the tac light of your choice to the end cap. That will look more professional than that clamp or duct tape. Properly brazed, the recoil won't jar it loose....want to take it off, just swap end caps.

Ok you two where is the love geez.
While you are looking around the electrical supply house you will also see spacing clamps for long runs of paralell pipes. Looked at on end view they are an hourglass shape with a secew in the narrow dimension that tightens the two halves together. These are great for clamping two pipes of different diameter [but not radically different] like 1/2'' to 3/4'' or 3/4'' to 1'' together and are ment to maintain spacing and support on long runs.
Just add a piece of rubber to protect the finish [innertube works fine] and snug them down.
My mini mag has been clamped on a single shot 12 gague many times works like a champ for rodent controll. Used to use it lots when my friend was raising game birds. It was normal to kill 10 or 15 rats per shot and shoot half a box of birdshot a nite.
Have fun

Sounds very promising. I'll check them out.

Thank you.
