Could you rechamber a henry single shot .223 to .327 federal magnum?

Question is in the title folks. For a long time I have wanted a single shot .327 federal magnum rifle and being crazy inexperienced in the world of rifles and gunsmithing I had no idea how to go about doing so.

Well today the thought just hit me out of the blue. Would the simplest way to do it be to just rechamber a .223 single shot rifle? The Henry comes to mind because it is the only .223 single shot I know of.

Am I correct in my understanding? Would this be the simplest way to go about getting my hands on a single shot .327 federal magnum long arm?

Thanks in advance for any and all insight into the topic.

You may have your terms confused. You would have to rebarrel or rebore the rifle. Sounds like an interesting project.

Thanks, yes, rebore the barrel is what I meant. Do you happen to know if the reboring process would include rifling the barrel as well, or would that be considered a separate additional process?

Looking at the specs on the Henry I think I would have it rebored to the .327 caliber, and thread it for a fun if bulky bumming around the woods gun. Maybe cut the barrel down to 16 or 17 inches, and have the front sight reattached, to reduce that bulk a bit. I am not sure how much more performance tou would squeeze from the .327 caliber with a 22" barrel vs a 17" one.

Sounds like a lot, but when no other options exist aside from building a whole gun from scratch I think this is the way you have to go.

.223 body diameter is bigger then 327 , so the chamber would be too oversize to work , unfortunately .

On Henry's website if you go to the contact us button there is a suggestion box , I have been asking them for a .327 for a while , maybe if enough of us pester them they will do it . I have been suggesting a Rook and rabbit style in .327 fed. because it is dimensionally about the same as 300 Rook , and a "cowboy" style in 32-20 ,25-20 and 25-35 and 38-55 . Keep hoping .

Bore should be .312 or so, not .327.

Could be done, not sure who is the person to go to for it though. I would take it to 17in or so myself.
Red dot may be a better way to go on it as depending on the barrel contour you may need new sights as the front may be higher if put back on.

Something similar was discussed here.
Here is the reboring service they are referring to:

If you get a Contender or Encore frame you can have a barrel custom made in .327. MGM, Bullberry, and E Arthur Brown all make barrels. I just wish somebody would actually make a single shot .327 you could just buy.
I ended up buying a Henry Big Boy in .327 and .41 mag. Nobody else made them and the used Marlin's out there I wasn't willing to pay the price.

This is an option, it looks like it would run more, but would be less hassle.

A contender can be gotten for about $700 on GunBroker, a nice set of furniture including butt stock and foregrip is $250, and an 18" barrel from MGM is $445. So $1400 before tax, shipping, ffl fee, etc and I think it would weigh less than the Henry.

Bolt face?
Action long enough to eject spent cartridge? How about an unfired cartridge?

Seems like a lot of expense and effort to go to to get an unusual cartridge in a single shot...... Other than the fun of being able to say that you've got a one of a kind gun, what advantage would there be?

The Contender 32Mag barrels are often .308 in diameter as that is what guys loaded for use in silhouette competition years ago. So, make sure you get the correct bore diameter if you go the custom barrel route. I looked into this in the past and some of them still cut the bore for 30 cal bullets rather than 32.

Henry lever gun in 327 was the path I took in the end.

Or, get the Henry single shot in 357Mag. If you want/need more power you can have that re-chambered easily to 357Max or 350 legend.
