This is not a big predator forum but figured I'd post anyway since big game season is coming to a close. Now that big game season is over my predator season is finally underway. I admit to calling a few stands in November while I was supposed to be scouting for elk and I called a coyote but missed him. Today however was my first official day.

The plan was to take my two girls out calling this evening. I went out to scout some new country while they were running errands with my wife in town. I got two stands picked out for the evening and then drove a little further and figured I'd try one stand by myself...

At about 12 minutes I see movement and lean forward and get set up to shoot. I can see a fox making his way towards the call. He stayed behind brush until about 20 yards then took an angle right to me. I drew on him at about 5 yards and he saw it and we stared at each other for a while. All I could think about was how I wish my girls were there to see it and that at 5 yards the shotgun may ruin the pelt. I didn't shoot and he booked it. I stood up to maybe shoot him on the run but I passed again. I don't know why but I really didn't want to shoot that fox.

I kept calling and at about 25 minutes I can see a pair of fox out ahead of me coming in really slow and cautious. I would mute the call once in awhile then restart and that seemed to perk their interest. They circled and as they came closer I decided I'd shoot one of them, was just thinking today I needed more pelts in the man cave and was wondering why I didn't shoot the first one since fox pelts are prettier than our coyotes. Anyway they circled and came up the exact path as the first one. The lead fox made me at about 10 yards and they turned broadside. I picked out the one that looked like it had the better pelt and fired. He ran off to my surprise and got behind a big juniper tree. I stood up and a fox squirted out from behind the tree going full bore. I shot it and it crumpled. Not knowing if that was the one I shot at originally I gave them a minute then walked behind the cedar tree. Sure enough I had got them both.

This is my first fox double:

I took the girls out for one stand this evening, nothing happened. It got windy this evening, storm coming in. The plan is to keep after 'em ;)

Good going.

Our native fox is the gray fox but I don't see many since the hound men imported red fox years ago. I'd like to kill every red fox I see but the hound men's lobby got all foxes protected .. No Hunting!

We've had several resident grays over the years. One would bark at the end of the sidewalk every evening until someone came to the door. Then it would proceed to the cow tank for a drink. Neat animals.

What size shot you use?

I like your posts with your daughters out there with you, those will be good memories for them and you. It's good for the young to realize where "things" come from nowadays.

My grandfather would kick my bottom if I were to kill a fox, but he liked to run them with horses, and drink moon shine.

Yeah I was disappointed they weren't with me, I think there are more in the area though. There's at least the one I passed on that stand if he hangs around. I like foxes too, I won't shoot another out of this spot unless my girls are there. I've passed on more fox than I've killed. Fox and bobcats generally get a pass outside of fur season (thanksgiving thru February). I shoot all the coyotes that come in, or at least try.

I use #4 buck, Dead Coyote loads by hevi-shot (size T) are popular as well as lead or copper plated BB.
