I've been shooting smallbore silhouette for about 8 months now and I'm having a great time. I figured I'd try branching out a little, so I picked up a Marlin 39 to use for cowboy silhouette. Thing is, I have very little experience shooting with 'target rifle' style sights. Almost all my rifles have scopes or red-dots and the only irons I use are on my handguns. I wanted something more precise, so I went with the William receiver aperture sight, which I like. Now I'm trying to decide on a good dovetail front sight.

It seems like most globe sights are meant for shooting at circular target since they work by having you line up conecntric rings. I imagine that means they wouldn't work well for silhouette shooting since the targets are not circular. I'm torn between a crosshair style hooded sight like this

and a fiber optic post like this

Does anyone have any experience with either of these sights? Also, does anyone know if these are legal for cowboy silhouette?

A Lyman globe front sight works really great. But rules say you can only use a post or a bead insert. I use a wide post insert.

Lever silhouette

Most of the lever action silhouette shooters use a Lyman 17A front sight. As the previous poster noted, only post or bead fron sights are allowed. This year there was a big controversy about the NRA rules committee disallowing any type of fiber optic front sight even if it was a bead.
The Lymna 17A comes in 4 different heights. make sure your fits. Mine is the lowest, but it is on a model 1897 with an octagonal barrel. The 39A has a thick barrel, so the same sight should fit, but you should check first.

Thanks guys, I'm going to try the Lyman with a post insert. The post that's on there now is ~.250" from the bottom of the dovetail to the center of the dot, so I'm going to get the lowest Lyman as well.
