I have been coyote hunting before but it's always been calling or over bait. For that I've used my Remington 700 in .223 w/a 3-9x scope.

It is possible that I may be going for coyotes this weekend, but for the first time for me it will be hunting with a dog. I have 4 guns that I have in mind but since I haven't gone with a dog before I was wondering what would be best suited for this type of coyote hunting. Here are my choices in order of what I am thinking is best:

A) AR-15, .223, 20" barrel, iron sights
B) 870, 20 ga, 26" barrel w/RemChokes, #3 buckshot, bead sight
C) Browning A-5 (Sears brand copy), 12 ga, 30" barrel, fixed mod choke, #4 or 00 buckshot, bead sight
D) Remington 700, .223, 24" barrel, Leupold 3-9x scope

These are the choices that I have, I will not be able to go out and get anything new including accessories or optics. I have plenty of the ammo listed for each gun, plus I have slugs for both the 20 ga & 12 ga.

Thanks!

I don't know that a dog is a good idea. Never tried it but coyotes will fight them. I'm interested to see what others say. You ever run this dog for yotes before? How do you plan on using him? Like I said that's a new method to me.

700 or ar should work fine. Id like the ar better for moving targets.

They wont be biting Grey Hounds. They will try & out run the G-hounds. Just not possible.
yote has lil to no chance, once the hounds are on him.

How will you be hunting with the dog? Is it a decoy dog or will you be chasing coyotes with it? Without further information I picked the scoped rifle option for more range, and you don't want to catch the dog with buckshot.

Husker,

Is this statement from experience? I have relatives in W. Kansas that used to use greyhounds, said they'll really s t r e t c h out to catch those yotes! Per the answer you're wanting OP, I'd leave the dog on the porch and take the Remington .223.

It's not my dog, a friend of the family has a bluetick coon hound that he hunts coyotes with it all of the time. I have never gone with him before but he is big into coyote hunting and gets 40 or more coyotes a year.

From what I gather the dog gets on a trail and chases the coyote either back towards you or ends up cornering it. Of course I would never take a shot that would endanger his dog, but it seems to me that most of the coyotes will be running shots. If the dog is 'on' a coyote or very close there is no chance for a shot.

Ask your friend what to bring. Most guys that run yotes with dogs around here take both a shotgun and a rifle and use what is appropriate for the area and the range where they will be standing. Most times the yote will be far ahead the dog(especially if you're only runnin' one hound). Since greyhounds hunt by sight and not scent, those that use greyhounds only use them after another hound has found scent and brought the yote out to where the greyhound can see them.
