My son took a coyote today, at his friend's farm outside of Gainesville. The animal was positivly identified, the friend is a DVM.

225 yards, AR-15 Colt HBAR target. Factory iron sights. 55 grain WW PSP. This shot was across a pasture, and when hit, the coy dog ran about 10 yards and piled up. Lung shot, bullet exited.

My rifle to boot, darn it

Your son is a good shooter. 225 yards with iron sights? You must be proud.

Yep, pretty good shootin' with iron sights, but the appeture does seems to give old eyeballs a few more years ... :)

Did your son happen to mention if it turned around and nipped at the "hurt spot" before he took off?

Hey guys, thats why he has the HBAR. When I was a whipper snapper, I could use iron sights too. Now for anything past rock throwing range, I like optics.

The shot he took was with the sun behind his back, using a fence post as a rest. The Coyote was standing still. I think many of us could make that shot. The HBAR will hold 4 inch groups at 200 yards easily, so the shot was not all that fantastic.

North Florida has been infested with Coyotes for years. When I lived in Gainesville, I hunted them in the Lacross area, and down around Williston.

Mannlicher old buddy...

Was getting on the SB 75 ramp at CR 236 (the welcome station exit) the other morning. Saw one of the little fellas walking as calmly as you please across the road.

I told that to Rob and the response?

"Why didn't you shoot it?"

Tell Art to come up here if he still wants to shoot some more of them.

A couple of days ago I was sitting on the back porch, waiting for the wife and another lady to get done beautifying and come on to go wandering.

A big dog coyote came casually walking around the corner of the house, past me at some ten feet out from the porch. Unconcerned. I howdied; he walked on. The gals came out, jacking their jaws as usual, but it didn't particularly faze him. They got a good look as he first did the usual "stop and look back" and then wandered on over the ridge.

Brazen devil...

Another house pet, Art? :) Keeps those quail, dove, and other critters company...

Coyotes kill and eat cats, puppies, chickens, geese, ducks, dogs smaller than they are, baby goats (got five from my neighbor's farm this spring alone) calves, rabbits, squirrels, quail, turkeys, fawns, colts, foxes, fox kits, pretty much anything they can overpower.

Kill coyotes whenever possible.

They are smart, and are the only large North American predator that has actually expanded its range in the last 200 years.

There didn't used to be coyotes in N. Florida.

A buddy of mine who lives down by Terlingua Creek, across from me, got irate because coyotes were coming up by his house at night and yodelling to his dogs. Someone told him that if he'd feed them, they'd shut up.

So, el-cheapo dog food did indeed create peace and quiet.

The yodel-dogs are so well-fed that they don't really hunt all that hard. The result is a lot of cottontails and quail, and the jackrabbits are making a comeback.

I think I'm gonna change the name of this place from "Cat Mountain" to "Desert Zoo".
