Coyotes love suburbs, but feeling isn't mutual

Perhaps coyotes will help dispell some of the goofy stuff pumped out over The Animal Channel and by groups like PETA that animals are just warm and fuzzy sweethearts. I imagine watching Mr. Coyote trotting off to din-din with Mittens or Spot in its mouth does more than the re-education process than a million words of logical debate from a hunter.

I just hope no kids are "contributors" to the educational process.

Best

I see them on a daily basis......most of the time they are just walking aroud the house.......I would love to get a shot at one, but they have some real good ears on them.....one little sound and they are gone. I guess Ide have to sit and wait.......

Think a 12 ga slug would do the trick?

i've used

22 mag for long range
12 guage up close

and once a 22 pistol that one damned near qualified as self defense. i came into chicken yard cornered one. he came towards the gate that i was standing in. hada change shorts after that one

Funny, I thought beagles were bred to be hunters.

most experts believe the stock goes back to greece in the time of the great philosophers. since then, beagles have been popular in many places. i have one here in china. he was the hit of the new year's eve party last night.

kings of england in the time of george 4 bred diminutive strains as small as 1.5 lb adult weight, calling them glove beagles, or pocket beagles.

no matter what the size, they run rabbits a hellin'.

No Shooting?

Back to the wrist rocket, then.

Hmmm.

Might not kill one, but it's good aversion therapy.

On the other hand, with a little practice, you could bring one down.

Miami Beach or San Francisco ??!!

I in lived both cities.

Miami has gators, feral pythons and probably has coyote.

I know for sure that San Francisco has lots of coyote.

1/2 hour south and north of SF along the coast has both
coyote and mtn lions.

Coyotes in SF?

Sure, 5 minutes north or south of san francisco, has coyotes, as well as big hogs, mountain lions, and such.

San fRancisco Proper? never seen or heard a coyote there. Where would they live?

San Francisco is a very small, very dense city. Can walk it end to end in under 2 hours, and will never see open space on most routes. Don't think the coyotes are crossing the Golden Gate from Marin.

Yes there are coyotes in San Francisco,

The Presidio has them as well, tons of open space from San Jose north to SF
especially along the coast. I HAVE SEEN THEM AND EVEN FOLLOWED THEM VIA MOTORCYCLE

you can call the US park police in the presidio and ask them your self if you don't believe me.

A coyote was captured in NYC in Central Park last year!

picture taken @ Baker Beach San Francisco

I used to see them almost every night in the Presidio, I would drive home that way.
SF also has feral parrots.
A deer closed Golden Gate bridge by walking from Marin to SF

In Ohio, coyotes are non-indigenous, originally ranging in the short grass prairie regions of North America, but have since expanded their range eastward taking advantage of a niche left vacant when red and gray wolves were extirpated (Parker 1995). The first confirmed report of a coyote in Ohio occurred in 1919 (Weeks et al. 1990).

Not sure what this writer was smoking, but at one time coyotes were indigenous to most of NA. They were driven away by man, and his changing habitat...but now they've adapted (much like deer have) to live in more populated areas. We've had record deer populations for several years (I have a whole bunch living "in my back yard") and we are now seeing a BIG growth in coyote numbers (which DO occasionally prey on deer, and were non-existant here when I started hunting 30 years ago). Saw a coupla coyotes trot acroos my back yard a while back, but they were gone by the time I got the gun ready. My buddy just started "ranching" sheep, and they're all over the place near him.

Steak - fixed it for ya!

If you don't like wildlife, there are nice Condos in Hermosa Beach.
If you want trees and some open space, shoot the coyotes and enjoy it.

"HISTORY OF THE COYOTE IN VIRGINIA: The coyote is not anative species of Virginia, and was first observed in the very westernregions of the Commonwealth in the early 1950s." - Virginia Dept. of Game & Inland Fisheries

Also,

"Coyotes were historically a western species with core populations found west of the Mississippi River. Alterations and/or elimination of competing predators during the post-European colonization period facilitated rapid range expansion into eastern North America during the 20th Century. Established populations now occur in every state and province in North America.

Coyotes are a relatively new addition to local ecosystems, and were first documented in Maryland during 1972" - Maryland Dept. of Natural Resources

Leave the coyotes alone. If they get your Beagle, your Beagle was weak, and therefore became lunch. Its a dog bred to be a toy. Keep them inside, or in sight.

If you don't like wildlife, there are nice Condos in Miami Beach or San Francisco that don't see much of it.

If you want trees and some open space, take the coyotes along with it.
+1 !!!!!:banghead:

I protect my friends

One of my friends is a 13 year old Beagle, I don't care what anyone says about her or if you only are a four legged predator.
You try to hurt her and I will protect her.
If you don't think there are Coyote in San Francisco then please visit me and I will drive over the mountain take you 2 SF and show them to you myself.

Out in rural Nevada folks shoot Coyote and Jack rabbit all the time, if you don't like it, Molon Labe!

We didn't rise to the top

of the food chain by letting predators attack hunting dogs.

I will not do what you want or do what you say.

Actually Beagles are dogs bred to chase fox, a hunting dog.

God gave us (well some of us at least) brains, we fashion tools (like guns)
and raise dogs to assist in hunting.

I don't submit to Coyote, they die, if I decide they need to.

Leaving aside the ignorance and ranting, coyotes are a real problem if you live in a no-shooting zone.

We've got bold coyotes who have stalked our children (and wiped out our chicken flock), and our local animal control people can't do anything useful. If one gets within pistol shot of me that's self-defense, but otherwise I'm feeling pretty helpless. I'm not an archer, but my best idea is to camp out in a high tree with NVG plus an IR laser on a crossbow. However, that's $3000 of gear I don't have. If I were in the country I'd jacklight them, but I can't do that here.

Suggestions welcome, rants not.

And if you think we've got a problem...

in some large African cities leopards have taken over the niche occupied by coyotes here. That's scary.

We've got them in Seattle. I was greeted at my mailbox late one night by a large one. She and I were both a bit surprised and we watched each other retreat in our opposite directions.

Lock up the cats and dogs at night, and don't feed the coyotes. All I know is that they were here way before we were!

As I was driving to work today, I saw that someone had hit & killed a coyote with a vehicle. I had never seen a real coyote until then. I never figured they'd be in my area. This particular coyote was definately big enough to attack a human. I reckon I'll have to keep a even sharper lookout when I go hiking now.:uhoh:

Lol, my thoughts exactly. There seems to be an element at THR. What they do in the hunting forum if they find hunting or killing animals objectionable, I have no idea.

patentnonsense, I had the same problem and a 5 page or so thread with many helpful suggestions a while back, you can look it up for tips on handling the problem.
