anyone seen these? Just came across my first one... WIN marked with ring crimped primer. Who was this made for? FBI or some other military contract maybe?

I know the Coast Guard up this way used 40 in their qualifications. The once fired casings I picked up were F.C. casings, IIRC.

More than likely their non toxic brand.
there was no NT anywhere, just WIN. Also the remington "Leadless" 9mm I've shot had no crimps, and the primers were supposed to be non toxic. And the small primer .45 brass I picked up that supposedly was for NT loads isn't crimped either. but maybe some is.

I'm not disagreeing or anything; just providing info. In any case it's a PITA. :D

More like .FC.

Could be, my rusty mind ain't what it use to be. :)

IIRC, which I may not, the headstamp had NT and a year stamped in it too. But I have reloaded any of them, so I can't say if the primer pocket was crimped.

Some crimps on cases are hard to see and yes they can be pain in the patootie

The GI .40 S&W headstamp on the brass the Coast Guard leaves behind on our range is: FC 10 and FC 12. There are no "dots" in the headstamp. And the primers aren't crimped.

Hope this helps.

The only crimped .40 I've ever run into was marked "NT"... it was one of the major brands, but oddly I don't recall which.

I recently shot a box of some "RG" 9MM I bought 500 of cheap years and years ago. Crimped primers. I have so much 9MM brass I just scrapped them instead of tossing them in with hundreds of non crimped brass.

Not worth dealing with crimped primers in pistol brass IMO, I have enough fun with them in 5.56.
Crimped pistol brass goes in the recycle can. It's a pain.

The very rocks cry out against thee!

This is what I have a 45 degree TiN countersink churcked into my drill press to deal with.

Shows up at lot in the manufacturer's "green" ammunition and to a lesser extent amongst other manufacturers, but it seems to be becoming more common to me.

I purchased a thousand .40 range brass pieces through a Facebook group a while ago.
I think afterwards I found out they were from a local National Guard range. I may be wrong, but I believe they were all federal cases. And it was implied they were Military Police.

Anyway, I remember all the dusted drill bits I went through while clearing out stuck primers in my shell holder. The easiest solution for me was stuffing the Lee deburing tool in a large socket and drilling the pockets out for seven seconds. It was a hassle but it worked. And the primer pockets have seemed to actually retain tension better than some other brass I bought around that time. All in all I would rather not deal with it.
