I have read a lot about removing the crimp in 556 brass before priming.

Can someone explain a bit about the actual crimp itself? Is it the full length of the primer? Is it just at the top portion like the crimp on a bullet?

I know there are tools that remove the crimp but can a drill bit be used successfully?

Thanks for any response.

The crimp is at the top portion of the primer pocket. I use a debur tool to remove the crimp. It makes a small beveled chamfer and the primer goes right in.

doorman is correct. I bought the dillon primer swaging tool years ago to use on .556, .762 and 9MM primer pockets. It pushes/swages the metal back into place and does not remove the metal. It is good for large amounts of casings. I you have only a hundred or so, it is not worth the purchase.
