Cumberland Co. Mother Shoots Home Intruder, Authorities Say

Authorities say that a home intruder was shot and killed after breaking down the door of a Cumberland County home and shooting at the pregnant mother of two inside.

EUREKA SPRINGS, N.C. -- A Cumberland County mother shot and killed an apparent home intruder Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
The shooting happened on the corner of Eloise Street and Charles Avenue in Fayetteville, where investigators said, a man kicked in the front door of the house, possibly to burglarize the house.
The woman, Crystal Strickland, 23, then shot the man, investigators said.
The victim, whose name was not released, left the scene in critical condition, but died shortly before arriving to a local hospital.
Authorities said Strickland told them that she did not know the intruder and at this point, believe the shooting to be a case of a mother trying to protect her children.
Strickland, who is 9 months pregnant, has two other children: one 3 years old and another 1 year old.

Man Killed While Allegedly Breaking Into Home Identified

EUREKA SPRINGS, N.C. -- Authorities released the identity of a man who they say was shot while breaking into the house of a pregnant mother near Fayetteville Tuesday.

Louis Deon McMillian of 822 Whitfield Street, Fayetteville, died after police said he tried to force his way into the home of Crystal Strickland, 23, in Eureka Springs.

Strickland told investigators she was watching television in the living room of her home when she heard a noise coming from the kitchen.

Strickland saw a shadow of a man and went to get her gun for protection.

The suspect then went to the front of the home and kicked in the door. McMillian pointed a gun at Strickland and shots were exchanged.

Strickland, who is 9 months pregnant and mother of two small children, told authorities she did not know the armed man. Her two young girls were taking a nap when the violent encounter happened.

Detectives say that the case is still under investigation and that when it is complete it will be turned over the district attorney who decide whether to file charges against Strickland.

if they prosecute this lady, and the basic facts are as they have been presented in these articles, then the local States Atty. needs to be ridden out of town on a rail. Castle doctrine should cover her, not to mention being in fear for her life and the lives of her kids, when being shot at.

Pregnant Woman Who Killed Home Intruder Gives Birth

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. -- A pregnant woman who killed an intruder has given birth to a baby boy.

Crystal Strickland was home with her young children when Louis McMillian broke into her home a month ago in Cumberland County. Strickland shot McMillian, who died.

Deputies have wrapped up their investigation. Now, the district attorney will decide whether to close the case.
