Hands down the Beretta Neos in 6". You can buy one new and put a red dot sight on it for under $300. I have one I bought for the wife to plink with. It shoots any ammo I have tried in it, including some questionable 30 yr old stuff I had I wanted to get ridnof. Easy to disassemble, very accurate, etc. If you have big hands like I do the grip is a bit small, but very comfortable otherwise.

Walther P22 goes about $350 new. You can probably find one used towards the high end of your range. A little ammo picky but not as much as my buddy's Sig SR2022

I picked up this LNIB Sig Hammerli trailside 6" for $300 at a local pawn shop with 3 mags....Ive got a ultra dot match do II on it presently and it shoots lights out.

I have a Taurus model 22BR and just love that pistol. It's not expensive at all, and it has never failed me. I think I spent about $200 for that one NIB.

My other 22 handguns are a Ruger revolver with a super long barrel, I think it's like 10" or so, but it wasn't in your price range.

I also have a Taurus M94 which is a 9 shot piece, very accurate. It isn't under $300 though. But if I'm not mistaken, Taurus has a couple budget priced one's, and they're probably closer to that $300 mark.

I dont have any experience with any but the mark III, the single six, and the heritage. I really loved shooting the semi Mark III, but it was a loaner for a while. The single six was one me and my brother bought for our dad.
I bought the heritage rough rider and have been very happy with it. Its very accurate and I use it for my "golf cart/tractor" gun. I have dispatched many mice and rats with it while bushhogging. Killed a couple wild pigs with it, and a couple crows. I shoot the 22 lr when I ride he tractor, but the beauty of these pistols, and the single six is you get a 22 mag cylinder also. This makes it a totally different pistol. The heritage was a little over 200 with fiber optic sights. You can get the irons for less. I like the fiber optics. I can pop a drink can at 25-30 yards easily with a prop. I bought it because it was cheap and would serve my purpose and take a beating sliding around as a revolver. It has really surprized me.

My vote will go to a used Ruger. I got a Mk2 some 8 years back for $275, like new, has a 2x LER cheap (BSA) scope and mounts. I was going to sell the scope and mount until I saw how accurate the thing was with optics, decided to keep the optics especially since my eyes are old. It'll keep a 1" 50 yard group off sandbags. I really don't think you can go wrong with a good used Ruger. A quality DA revolver will set you back a lot more and not shoot any better if as good. Lots of stuff on the market to improve stuff on the Ruger, too, not that I feel it needs improving for general hunting/plinking which is what I do with mine. Serious competition shooters are probably going to want a different gun, anyway, something along the lines of a Smith 41 if not a Hammerli or such.

Mine; VQ trigger, Sam Lam bushing, VQ hammer, VQ sear and springs VQ Volthane grip.

My wife's: Pac-lite upper, VQ lower and internals, VQ bolt and mainspring housing (the only Ruger parts are the magazines!)
