Ok say I own a beretta 92, but I'm not a fan of the open slide design. Could I possibly have a custom slide machined easily? Obviously its not going to be cheap but just how expensive would it be?

Say I wanted the slide to be something like the vektor sp1 slide?

Dolphin slides....

Years ago, a after market stainless steel 92/96 slide was out there. I think it was called the Dolphin or Dolphin Arms. It may or may not still be for sale.
The slide was thicker & covered most of the Beretta barrel. The sale price then was around $175.00 USD.

David Olhasso, www.olhasso.com may have more details too. He's well known for Beretta pistols.

Fogadaboutit!

The whole Beretta 92 is designed around the open top slide.

If you prefer the vektor sp1 slide design that much?

Trade the Beretta 92 for one.

Dolphin Products Inc....

The firm is(was) called Dolphin Products Inc of Oceanside CA. They had a US Navy contract with the specwar command.
That may have been in the late 1990s.

Phrobis made Navy Spec slides, dive knives and bayonets.. they are rare to find these days as most surplus ones were sold off in Shotgun News ages ago. The logo was dolphin shaped.

Rather than machining a brand new slide out of a hunk of steel, it would be easier & cheaper to weld a dustcover on to your existing slide.

So what about the open slide do you not like? Is it an aesthetics thing or have you had some issues with dirt/grime/etc getting lodged in the action?

I didn't know what to think about the design when I bought mine. It looked like a good place for dirt and foreign debris to collect. Then again, I had heard about Glock supposedly not recommending plugging the bottom of their pistols to give it a place for the debris to work its way out.

I was rather surprised at how clean my 92fs was after I shot it.

On another forum, when the subject of making a single frame, one of the smart manufacturer/metal guys suggested it would cost somewhere between $12,000 - $15,000 for one frame. If you were to produce a bunch of them, the cost per unit would certainly go down significantly.

I suspect you could make a slide cheaper, but I don't know how much.

Weld a sheet of steel over the exposed area, then grind and polish until it looks like a solid slide. Refinish the new slide and you are done.

This was the way old-timer gunsmiths did mods before there were aftermarket parts and an internet to locate them.

Well that idea went up in smoke like black powder. It was mainly just an aesthetics thing. That and I just like the idea of a closed or semi closed slide better.
