custom dogger suggestions

For ranges like that, you need the higher BC of 6mm or 6.5mm bullets. Then you have to have the right twist rate. So it's probably a matter of picking a bullet and velocity you want to use, and then selecting the right cartridge and twist rate. Are you planning to shoot coyotes for their pelts? You might need a totally different load for that than one used for varmints.

I'd use the .243 Winchester or a wildcat using that case for the ranges you specified.

There's some good information here:

"But your gun with power for 600 yard coyotes is going to be terribly over-power & recoil for a days shooting on a prairie dog town!" ---ditto to what that guy said :)

Neck down 6.8 spc or 6.5 grendal to 6mm. They are called 6mmturbo, 6mmAR. Different enough to be different, but still use a host of readily available parts. Will fit your bill for either gun, and range with proper bullets and placement. Or step up to 6mm br. Or 243 wssm. Those still fit inside an AR15. I would pick a bolt gun over asingle shot though, but its YOUR rifle, so get what YOU want. Let us know what you choose.

West;

I'd think if you go the AR build route that the Grendel would be ideal for what you want to do. If it's going to be a bolt gun then I'd have either the 6mm Remington or the 6.5X55mm Swede. As it so happens, I do have the Swede, on a left hand action and it shoots pretty darn good. I get 2750 out of a 22" Lilja barrel, using a Sierra 140 grain GameKing and the brass tells me I'm not pushing the limit either. I also hunt elk, here in Outer Montana, and don't feel under-gunned with the Swede at all.

I considered the swede, and a few others as well. My only issue with that round is that it belongs in a bolt gun. I have and like volt guns but the cost to build is somewhat ridiculous when compared to other options. I'm nearly set by now on the grendel. I plan to build the lower first and top it with something cheap while I build my upper. I figure I'm in for a $1500 build plus a grand give or take for a scope...probably vortex but not decided yet.

Go over to Varmint's Den and see what those guys use. They do this same stuff you want to do all the time. They make up all kinds of combos and calibers

you said you were thinking about having MGM make a barrel for your Contender
i think for 600 yard shots i would step up to the Encore 243/6mm or maybe a 25/06 good luck

Lucky...I have a contender, and several companies are making grendel barrels for the contender...I don't have an encore and would not consider that as an option...it would cost as much as an AR for a single shot. No thanks.

Not yet but I'm looking more and more that direction. I have had a stag and a dpms that never satisfied me. As a big bad toy that is accurate as can be I think I will be happier.

Fella's;

Yeah, you can get some impressive muzzle velocities with the quarter-bore Weatherby, but the superior B/C's of the 6.5mm bullets win when ya get out there. The 6.5's are only .007" larger diameter, but the maximum bullet weights available are considerably heavier. Which results in outstanding sectional density and truly excellent B/C's. Just what the doctor ordered for long-range accuracy and terminal performance.

Any experience positive or negative with the 6.5 grendel?
I have a 6.5 Grendel with a 24 inch Alexander upper. It shoots OK with 123 A-Max bullets at the ranges you mention, but best have a good range finder bedause the trajectory is about like throwing a football. As another poster mentioned, a 6mm based on the Grendel or 6.8 SPC would be great in an AR 15.

In an AR-10 size I would look at the 6.5 Creedmoor and/or the 6mm Creedmoor. Both are equally at home in a bolt gun.

West;

I agree that to take full advantage of all a 6.5 can give you, you need to have it in a bolt gun. I'd suggest going to the website JBM Ballistics, play around with various bullets, and see what's what at the ranges you're telling us you want to shoot to.
