What a great looking Classic! My 45LC/454 Stutzen shoots 185 gr cast lead over Trail Boss okay but loves the heavies: 250 FTX & 300 gr XTP over hot H110. It seems to eat just about anything. Groups with the 185s and TB are fairly open (3" at 100 yds) but the FTX and XTP loads (particularly in hot Casull loads) are generally 1.5" at 100 yds.

I've been meaning to look into rifle powder loads for these to see if there is additional benefit from having the 20" barrel. Not sure how to go about it though. Big bore, medium burn rate?

Thanks, I love that little gun.
I don't go any faster burning than Unique or Universal with lead.
Your H110 loads sound about perfect for hot rodding a Colt carbine/rifle. I've never tried rifle powders, I don't think there would be enough gain.

BTW, 3" at 100 ain't half bad for the .45 Colt and light bullets.

I've been doing a lot of plinking with the 200 Hornady LSWC over 7 grains of Trail Boss (pictured) and the Hornady .454" round ball seated deep over 3 grains of Trail Boss in un-sized cases. The SWC's will do 1" at 50 yds, and the round balls surprised me by doing 3" at the same distance. At 25 yards they are 1 hole accurate from a rest. Not as quiet as I had hoped though, but still far quieter than any other load.

I lube all my lead bullets with liquid alox and also butter the bore with it. The SWC's also get a .452" X .060" vegetable fiber wad at the base (not down on the powder). Smoke and leading are non-existent and the bore cleans up with a few patches wet with mineral spirits.

My next trial will be with 230 LRN (Hornady of course) to take advantage of their much better aerodynamics (compared to the SWC's). I think they should do a little better at 100 yards and have an improved trajectory.

Have fun.
