I had big plans to send my Remington 788 in 22-250 into ER Shaw and have a 1-8" twist barrel installed and have it chambered in 22-250 AI. I took it out of the safe to look it over today and that idea simply won't work. The ejection port is much too small and there is no hope of using the factory magazine for heavy 22 cal bullets. Eliminating the magazine and making a single shot would not be too difficult but I can't come up with a solution for the short ejection port. The factory barrel has a couple thousand more rounds than its expected lifespan and is time to go. Any obvious suggestions? I have no interest in screwing a boring 22-250 standard twist barrel back in. The 22 BR Remington might be an option..........

I'm missing something here - the ejection port is too small?????
My 22-250IMP 40 seems like about the same OAL for the case as the std 22-250, I don't think the ejection port is an issue at all.
As far as the mag, OAL with a heavy bullet might be an issue, but the feed lips can be tweaked to feed if the OAL is within mag restrictions.

That said, if you find the NORMAL BORING 22-250 so sleepy, get a 6XC -
1-7.5" 28"+ barrel should liven things up

Are you gonna neck turn?

AOL

Yes the AOL is what I would have to overcome. I wanted to shoot 75 or 80 grain bullets.

Just fill in the mag opening on the bottom of the reciever, and make it a single shot the ejection port is not a problem. Did mine and it works. Al

I guess it's boring like a standard Corvette would be.

You'll find that the velocity advantage enjoyed by the 22-250 Rem over that other boring cartridge, the 223 rem, allows slightly slower twists to be used. Fast twists in a 22-250, can and will blow the jackets on lighter varmint bullets due to the high rotational speeds attainable, and makes a fast twist 22-250 more one dimensional.
You pay your money and you make your choice.

I also would plug the magazine well and go single shot. A friend did it to his 788 and never misses the magazine capacity but is glad to be rid of the protruding clip.

A fast twist, high BC .22-250 would do good work, but I would stick to the regular chamber if only to save the cost of loading dies and the trouble of fire forming the AI.

You can probably slide an over length round into the chamber but if you change your mind and want to unload instead of firing it, you would have to remove the bolt.

you could do a custom bolt like I have seen on the .50 cal bolts. The round is held by the bolt before and after firing.. no eject
