I am on my first Rem 788 rebarrel. I see that there is a relief of the threads under the gas port on the action. I also see that there is a about .250 of threads before this relief.

The question is, Does the relief actually serve a purpose or is it usually ignored and thread the whole shank?

What says the gun plumbers? I believe I'll follow the factory.

I also have seen over the years people say the 788 is a superior strength action. I measured the bolt head thrust at .0045. This is not encouraging. With proper machining I can get a Rem 700 under half that. Also, the threads in the action are obtrocious. Even if I trued the threads the slop in the bolt and the 3" of bolt to flex makes this action dodo to me. I'm glad this is a hunting rifle.
